For the same price as a st shoebox flat in Didsbury you could have a nice flat in Hale, which is not only a far nicer area, has better nightlife, less crime (therefore insurance) and no fking students; but is roughly same distance away on train which is more convenient than the crammed buses going from Didsbury. I have lived in both, and I was very underwhelmed by Didsbury.

I'm moving to manchester in a few months and taking my TVR with me (not sure if thats wise). Where are the car crime hot-spots to avoid? Or where are the areas with lots of garages / secure parking?

With regard to car crime, I'd say most of the area frown . But that's a perception, not necessarily factual...

There are some websites that give an idea of what 'risk' insurance give to different postcodes - from A (lowest risk) to F (quite!) then onto 'Refer' (ouch!); most of Greater Manchester is rated at F and 'Refer', sadly frown .

If you can get the postcodes for properties you plan on looking at with a view to renting or buying, try them on www.police.uk and see what the 'vehicle crime' rate has been in their local area recently...

Regardless, I'd say to bring the TVR and use a DiskLok to stop it going walkabout; also fit a 'hidden switch' for the ignition or fit an immobiliser smile .

I can't comment on the availability of private garages, but a local letting or estate agent might be able to?

Having lived in and around Manchester for the last 15 years with a strong love of performance cars I would now not even contemplate having a decent car without a garage - living in Didsbury and Heaton Moor (car parked on road and later driveway) we were burgled 3 times (eg sledgehammers through the door looking for car keys) and sadly our elderly neighbour in Heaton Moor was badly assaulted as I used to park my car outside his house (when I lived in a flat opposite)and the scumbags targetted him thinking it was his car.

Also my experience of the Police following these break ins was very poor and they clearly had no interest in investigating the crimes.

Since getting a house with a garage (touch wood...) we have had no further problems. Having lived in Weybridge for many years before, Manchester is a world apart in terms of automotive crime.

I've already looked into private garages and the options are limited.

I live in a high code area but that's only because my area happens to fall within Salford City boundaries. I can say though that it's a great area and although there are the occasional burglaries we've been lucky so far.

I've had nice cars as has my family and aside from getting my wheels stolen have has no issues.

We get a lot of stick up here but Manchester is a great place to live if you avoid certain parts.

Transport links are getting better but still way off what the need to be. I'm definitely going to look at living in city centre towards the year end though. The suburbs are a bit drab really
