Does anyone remember Reynolds 'The Power behind the wheel'?

They had a massive place on the way into Southport but shut down almost overnight about 10 yrs ago. I think they had a fuel division - remember seeing one of their old tankers a couple of years ago.

Warbby, i know Jag in Preston is down on the docks. Speaking of which - was there a Rolls Royce dealer down there at one time??

Hatfields Jeep Chrysler closed a couple of years ago, and ive got a mate who lives literally a stones throw round the corner - every man and his dog haved looked to buy it to turn it into a 'luxury cars specialist'. Not a great location in my opinion though - William Loughran is far better placed.

Imagine testing driving a car from a dealer on Blackpool Road - it'd be a great way of showing you how it performs at 15 mph and in traffic jams.

Is the Toyota dealer still there in Blackpool road??

Went past the Land Rover dealer in St Helens last night and that's shut down.

Its been there years - was Hartwell Charles Clark, then Hartwell, then James Edwards. It would appears James Edwards have effectively bought the 'business', and then sold the hard assets - or will do; as the sign in the window says 'We have moved..... blah blah blah.... to James Edwards Land Rover Chester'.

Not a bad way to do business for JE - but unfortunately a tidy looking 'discount carpet warehouse' or similar is probably on the cards for that site.

I used to love that old Bauer Millet place.

The last place was good too.

The new place isn't a patch on the old ones!

Although not located on a main road does anyone else remember Martin Ingham-he always had hilarious adverts for the cars he sold, and always had some very nice cars for sale too.
I spoke to a customer who saw Martin last week-unfortunately he's not been very well recently and has scaled down his operation a bit since his heyday in the 90's.
I reckon this is him.
Really disappointing, I was expecting 'Famous Italian redhead with a desire for speed and european touring, loves tlc and expects the high life', no 'German thoroughbred of some repute desires new master to whip her into shape' or anything like he used to use in his ads frown Used to love reading what he'd thought up to sell a knackered Range Rover.
That's the fella....

Is he the guy who used to advertise if you rang him and you were a canvasser he would go into "uncontrollable valve bounce", or some such??.......laugh
I once applied for a job with him.

Not even a sniff of an email back. Think he was offended that a 22 yr old quantity surveyor (a few years back) was applying for a job selling posh motors! Well, why the heck not!?!

Kinsey Jones Lotus dealers in Bury, and also for a time in Alderley Edge.

I went to the Bury showroom one day with the money burning a hole in my pocket to buy an Elise, but the staff didnt have the time or courtesy to even acknowledge me so I bought something else(Merc SLK)elsewhere.

They didnt last very long(only 3 or 4 years?)which isnt suprising IMO
They sold Marcos too i think didnt they?

As a young lad just passed his driving test in the early 80's. I used stand outside the Ferrari dealership on Peter Street in Manchester city Centre - can't remember the name of it, but remember seeing 308's inside the showroom.

My dad also bought his Audi's at Peter Street Motors (Audi Dealer) on Liverpool Street in Salford.
Ferrari dealers was Sutton, owned by the haulage company in St Helens.
The hours I spent stood outside Bauer Millet on Peter Street dreaming of the cars he had in there.
I know Suttons of St Helens well as live quite local.

So they had a Ferrari dealership? Bit of an odd move but each to their own!

I noticed today one dealer that has gone that has been around years - Foxfield in Wigan.

They were based in Shevvy originally selling Rover, but them moved to Martland Park and took on Fiat. When Rover went under, they took on Hyundai and to some extent Isuzu, as well as Mitsubishi, but that side never took off. Fiat seemed to carry on OK though.

I called today to see if the number was out of use and it's not - turns out they were acquired by Honda in 2009, who've run the Fiat side into the ground and now Honda have a modern dealership rather than the one on Wallgate. Foxfield is officially gone.

Shocked, as i thought now would be a good time for Fiat dealers - not good, but certainly better than the past few yrs - perhaps busy late 90s with the Punto and Bravo/Brava, then a quiet dull start to the new millenium - but of late, the Grande Punto seems popular, as does the 500.

Also, noticed that Hartwell Land Rover St Helens, that changed to James Edwards Ltd, is now a self-drive company.

Must be why Williams have opened a Landy place in Liverpool then. Nearest place after that is either Manchester-way, Guy Salmon in Knutsford or James Edwards in Chester.

See Kinders in Preston mentioned a couple of times. Bought a 325 Touring from there in 1989 as brother in law used to be a sales bod there. Is the SAAB dealership on the A59 at Samlesbury still going?
The garage is there - but last time i passed, they have more Ssangyoungs and Chinese Rovers there than Saabs.

Called Bay Horse.

Apologies for the incorrect info - was just something I heard. Did you work there or something Drew?

Hi Sider, your statement below re: Rigby Turner VW being 'murdered' by VW UK for selling imported vehicles is incorrect. VW UK at the time re-organised their market areas with many franchise partners swapping and changing territories - Rigby Turner simply found themselves with no catchment area to represent. There was certainly no misdemeanour on their part. A number of long standing dealer partners found themselves without the VW badge above the door - Barbers, Hartwell etc.

Of course you're right

http://mtb.chrysler.co.uk/warrington/index.aspx

BUT, take this with a pinch of salt!

I used to do a bit of work with a SEAT dealer who did Renault 'parts and service only' too - and at the time, a Clio 172 was classed on the ordering system as a 'part' and as such they could order and register it on the road for anyone interested.

Also, a local Kia dealer used to sell Toyota and now does 'parts and service only' but can get a good price on any new Toyota model - hence why his used sales pitch has a 80% toyota 20% kia split with pre-reg'd cars everywhere, at good discounts.

Apparently the likes of Seat UK and Kia UK would be very unhappy about the goings-on above - but i say every man for himself.

On that note, if you're looking for a new Jeep, i'd have a quiet word with a man at MTB!

After all, this can't be that old a pic

Nipped to Southport yesterday and got me thinking of another old name - one thats probably been discussed on this thread - but still!

"Reynolds - The Power behind the wheel" - remember them?

They used to have a few tankers on the road too - not sure if they did bulk fuel deliveries or whether it was just petrol to their own stations.

Just done a google and apparently they were AE Reynolds Plc.

Stewart Wilson auto design - yes, remember them.

Not sure if they're still going but they were a few years back.

In about 2002, when Ford launched a new shape Fiesta, i called into Quicks Ford at Old Trafford to have a look and they had a so-called Fiesta GT edition in. Turned out it was a 'Finesse' with a SW kit on it. I spoke to the sales guy a few weeks later who told me it'd sold (what was i thinking!!?) but that they could get the kits in from SW for about £1500 +500 spraying and fitting.

Spoke to SW direct and they told me they could supply, spray and fit for £1k.

Then i bought a Peugeot.

Just on bodykits - does anyone remember the old car mags with the black and white 'RGA' adverts in. Think that's what they were called - seemed to do a kit for all cars - be it a Renault Fuego or a Nissan Bluebird!

There was another place that my brother used to go for his 'go faster stripes' - a shop on Deansgate in Manchester city centre.

We used to pop in there to look at the latest range of wheels from Momo/BBS. I think my brother bought a steering wheel from them for his Golf GTi.

During the 80's we also 'frequented' car stereo places for the latest releases from Alpine/Sony/Pioneer/Kenwood/Clarion etc... - happy days.

Do you remember the shop on Wilmslow Road (I think) near the Christie Hospital, can't remember what they were called. I had a few stereos/alarms fitted there.
Transound.

I remember(1988/89) the owner having a red Porsche 959,his name was Leon and the reg number on the car was 1EON.
Does this place have a white frontage with a chequered-flag type logo with red text???

I called at somewhere near Christies about 5 yrs back and the guy had a really old Jag racer in - will have a look for the pics of it that i took on my phone tonight. I'm sure he had a Ferrari Daytona in too. Seemed a lot of nice metal for a car radio fitter!

Ok, another one for the list:

Richard Rhodes Peugeot, previously Firsway Garage, Wigan, Peugeot Main dealer - now 'Stoneacre Peugeot' - seem to be trying to shift more pre-reg'd Fiats that sell new Pugs.
