Does Mr Moon (or his family) still own HW Moon in Wigan, or has it been taken over by a bigger group?
Humphrey still owns the new dealership and is usually there most days.Hes not as young as he used to be but he doesnt drive a tame car.He has the newest version of a 911 whatever that is these days.
As for the old garage in Heskin,he wanted to demolish it and build on it as the old building is looking bad,but the local council in its infinate wisdom wont let him.
So its looking pretty poor these days.

Anyone remember Fred Grimes on Standishgate/Wigan Lane.It was there for something like 80 years before it was flattened and flats built on it.Stan Jackson ran it for most of that time but sadly passed away 4 or 5 years ago.Stan was a board member at Wigan Athletic.
Used to love my dad going there to look at the cars as Stan would always open the toffee drawer and my eyes would light up.
He had his minters in the showroom and his part-ex lesser cars stashed around the side of the showroom.Happy days.

I remember Fred Grimes.

My Dad is an accountant and his firm used to do their accounts. One of the Grimes or Jackson family owned a Toy shop next door - recall going there as a kid for us, and then my Dad looking at a car next door - was an old-ish chap then - very friendly.

We never bought the car but do remember the dealership well.

Can't be many independent/not massive group Renault dealers left!
Suttons of Tarleton are still going as an official Renault dealer.

Ah, yes! I didn't realise it was called Harold Barlows! I used to know some of the traders that shared the sales pitch next door!!
Thanks for enlightening me!

Hindle and Walker became Walker Farrimond. They took over Whytes Mazda and Coulthurst & Grimshaw.

The former Coulthurst & Grimshaw VW site was ultimately sold to Lookers whilst the former Whytes Mazda site is now Perrys.

Greenacre Garage is still going strong and now occupies the former Coulthurst & Grimshaw site in Blackburn.

Holland Motors in Southport. Knocked down a few years ago to make way for a Lidl and a couple of shops.

My Dad was well in there, he knew Bill Allen (James Allen, the commentators dad). He wangled dad one of the first 50 pre production Escort Twin Cams to do the Players no.6 autocross championship. It cost Dad £1100 and had 2 'bucket' seats in. Proper racy!

Thompson Doxy. On Southport Road, as you come in to Southport from Ormskirk. They use to garage a lot of the race cars when the British GP was held at Aintree. Was knocked down in the 70's IIRC to make way for a Tesco. That Tesco store has been demolished and the site is now empty as Tesco have moved further in towards Southport.

Birkdale Service Station, Liverpool Rd, Southport. Used to be a BL Garage and a Mobil petrol station. I worked there as a student. Petrol was 29p per gallon. It was a while ago...

Ainsdale Garage, next to Cubleys. Did Mazdas and stuff IIRC.

"Full Tank of fuel. £9.88". Get the time machine out, please.

Edit - just realised i'm a chump, and that's the VAT on the fuel, not the fuel itself. boxedin

Was Holland Motors the space that early 2000's did lots of Jap import stuff - Pajeros etc?

Also, you seem like a 'Southporter' - is what was Cubleys now Chapel House? My friends Grandad had a Saab 900, C reg, and used to take us on daytrips in it during schools hols to places like Southport and always seemed to call in to Cubleys and get treated like royalty.

He passed away a few years back but Saab UK were interested in his car for a bit of a showpiece at their offices apparently as it was 20 years old but like new condition!

Also, the garage that was Reynolds - big place on the left as you head in towards Kew Retail Park from Ormskirk/Scarisbrick way - always looked quite new to me - did that place have much of a history?

Holland motors was a standalone ford dealership. I think it went pop and a trader took over the premises for a short while selling preloved jap stuff. Only lasted a few months before JCB moved in and levelled the site.

Reynolds was a new build some years ago, then got taken over by lookers afaik.

Cubleys is now Chapelhouse.

I know what you the one and only Escort MK2 RS1800 I have ever seen was being sold there. The chap who bought it turned out to be a customer of my late fathers.I have a photo of the cars they were selling beack in the day somewhere.RS Northwest still in business but run by someone else and not selling RS cars just fixing general cars for service. Almost for to say that RS Northwest had a fire in the late 80's caused by a tech setting fire to a car. The RS1800 which they were selling again had some damage to the fire.

i'd love to see some more photos of rs northwest, i live quite close to it and when my dad was a kid he used to walk past it on his way home from school, it's what eventually made him get a mk2 rs2000
