What do you all do?
Discussion
This thread is blatantly stolen from teh PH Business Forum, but it's thrown up some interesting things that people do to make money. So thought I would bring the idea across to the Yorkshire forum and find out what the local PH'ers do.

"I see a lot of posts on here and sometimes wonder hmm I wonder what line of business they are in? I think sometimes posting details can of course be a personal choice or sometimes to avoid das mods/advertising policy. But sometimes its interesting to know what industry people are working in to make sense of their replies.
Anyway heres a thread posted in context. Whats your business and tell us how you are doing?
Off you go then
I'll do the same as Fridaypassion, I'll wait for a few posts before posting my own.
One or 2 lines max stating what you do. No full on sales pitches please.
Please do not add a website link

I sell eyelashes and permanent makeup.
www.davehemingway.net is more interesting to PH though.
(That url is ok as it is an online record of your well known motoring exploits Dave)

I like this thread, could be a useful tool to put work towards fellow Yorkshire PH'ers. Good idea OP.
I took the family for fish and chips in Whitby on Saturday and drove past your 'office'. WOW, I've never been on that road before. Wished I was in a real car, I made everyone seasick in the Rangie by leathering it I like this thread, could be a useful tool to put work towards fellow Yorkshire PH'ers. Good idea OP.

I work for Green Flag
I'm in a team that liases with garages and handles all the complex stuff. Breakdowns involving massive motorhomes, long recoveries where we try to get alternatives to save money and the member some aggro, repudiate policies. Stuff a bit different to the everyday breakdown.
Also work in the behind the scenes bit and do Queue Management (those who've ever worked in a callcentre will be familiar with the kind of role!)
Not only that, but I'm trying to start a Carbon Fibre business. But time and (lack of) money slow me down!

I teach English (11-16 at the moment, but have also done A Level) and help to run the department. Also a marker for GCSE English for one of the big exam boards. Oh, and I do a bit of private tuition too.
In non-education matters, I do a bit of writing. At the moment it's mainly just SEO/copywring stuff for a mate's web design firm. I'm quite good at including target phrases in a variety of convoluted and search-engine-attracting ways

Guys,
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but this thread definitely constitutes advertising, mainly due to the fact that you have put your URL links up.
Great to know what we all do and, we can see it being of potential benefit to others in some instances, but it is still advertising.
Rather than close a potentially interesting thread down, we have edited the posts to take the URLs out.
Cheers,
al

Al - so why have the Mods on the Busines Forum allowed the thread to continue with links? I agree that if people put a pitch, or a special PH offer on the thread then yes that's advertising, but a simple website link - which can be in profile anyway and a short one line description like "we tighten bolts" above surely that's ok?

That sounds like the kind of job I wish I could do.In reality I work for a large global IT corporation that makes lots of money but doesn't like to share it with staff, I fiddle with computer stuff for a number of customers but work from home. I mainly focus on application packaging and deployment but touch on lots of other areas too.

Isn't this a bit pointless anyway Al, as most people have a link to their websites on their profiles?Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but this thread definitely constitutes advertising, mainly due to the fact that you have put your URL links up.

I cannot say for the business section I'm afraid but it has been noted. It is a very fine line and some of the web sites would be of no material value to the average PHer, but then you get the ones for detailing companies, or garages or similar that are. If we let one person link to their litho print company web site for example, then we would have to allow a car detailing site or garage to be mentioned also?Another issue to bear in mind is the amount of "reports" that come through. Where we try to be as balanced and reasonable as possible, if people report a thread on the basis of the laid down rules, then we have to respond. And believe me, we do get a lot of reports.
As you say, if people have a service or company that is of genuine interest to others, then interested parties can simply look at their profile and email them off forum.
Hope this explains a little.

Oohhh - I might throw some Altiris Deployment questions in your direction then, after I've finished trying to demolish this proverbial brick wall with my forehead In reality I work for a large global IT corporation that makes lots of money but doesn't like to share it with staff, I fiddle with computer stuff for a number of customers but work from home.
