Red Arrows came over East York about 3.30-3.35 and at 12.15 there was a VERY big jet, looked like a commmercial jumbo - flying VERY low out over Sheriff Hutton/Malton area...

Funnily enough this morning at about 8.40 on the way to work in Malton I could see what appeared to be a large commercial aircraft at very low level to the West over Malton, wasn't close enough to get any more detail but that's what it looked like.

Mark, was it a big white thing? A twin prop-engined aircraft buzzed me when I was walking the dogs in Rillington the other day. Looked a bit like a Dakota.
Yep, was right on the horizon so couldn't get too good an idea of shape but definitely white.

The Sea King is back in the air around ours again today. Exercise must be continuing.

At lunchtime I saw it again, large white or grey aircraft, quite a distinctive T shaped tailplane.

Now we've got Typhoons intercepting a little single engined job over the office, very low, big high energy turns, the lot, it is very loud and superb to watch.

I saw that south of ampleforth, slowand very low. Didn't see the t tale as it was a way off but it looked vaguely dc3 in shape.

A photographer I know who is a staffer for the Scarborough Evening News has just tweeted that a DC3 is coming back to Scarborough, I've asked him for more details

If it is C-FTGI it is a Basler turbine conversion DC-3 basically stretched and re engined with P&W PT6 turbine engines.

It certainly looks very like that, so I did a bit of a google on Bell Geospace...

'A privately held company that is the exclusive provider of three-dimensional full tensor gradient data to the oil and gas market.' scratchchin

Wonder why they are flying over Rillington, repeatedly.
I wonder if it is anything to do with the potash exploration?

Wow, thanks for that mate, I had no idea.

I wonder what implications that has for home owners in the area, if any.
AFAIK you own the mineral rights below your house, so there could be some wealthy farmers / land owners in the offing.

happening again today, but not so loud, so probably flying higher! Definately sounds jet based, really deep rumble, typically cloudy again so not able to spot!!

I might own it, but I don't think my Black and Decker will drill down far enough to get to it! laugh
hehe They'll pay you a percentage though. Funnily enough was discussing the very topic in the pub on Sat night. An ex-farmer mate of mine has some friends near the big potash mine (is it Boulby?) on the coast who made a lot of money by simply agreeing to let them mine under their land.

Boulby yeah.

Umm, I'm not sure I like the idea of them mining underneath my house though! yikes
That was my initial thought but then I was told how much you can make, and if your house fall into a hole into the ground - as long as you're not in it at the time - all will be made good again. Can't remember the specific numbers as it was late and those pesky black sheep had been forcing themselves upon me, but I do remember it being a very good salary, for essentially doing nothing.

Next time I see my mate I'll get him to remind me who much it was.

Just this minute flown very very low over Helmsley. Hadn't realised it had a bloody great boom out the back.

Not sure if its the same, but noticed the awacs plane in the Newcastle area at lunchtime (the one with the giant smarty on its back, our 3 year old daughter points out), makes a fair bit of noise.
