What's flying over York at the moment?
Discussion
Local paper had a small article about the Korean Air Force Display team being based at Leeming this summer, they use the Korean Kai T-50.
Just saw them landing into Leeming this lunchtime I think (they weren't the Hawks that usually overfly here).
Might explain some of the more unusual jet sightings recently.

happening again this morning and managed to catch a glimpse through the cloud cover.....single fighter jet sized plane that did not appear to be doing much "jigging about a la Top Gun" but still sounded thunderous!!!
20 minutes later and it's back!

Hi, I work in Malton once a fortnight or so and I always fighter planes coming over. I was just wonder if there is an air base nearby where they are flying from? I wouldn't mind a drive over to watch then take off if possible. Thanks for you help
You quite often get Typhoons, f-15s, Tonkas and Lynxes flying over Caulkley's wood when the weather is good. Caulkleys is the bank (Howardian Hills) that is in front of you when you come out of Hovingham on the way to Helmsley. What is the white pencil-slim Gulfsream configeration, engines aft of the wings and so low it knocks leaves off trees. Seen it over the Vale of york several time in past 3 years. Last Wednesday 5 June 2013 over the Molescroft area to the north of Beverey, midafternoon. Last seen heading ESE out over the coast. Could it really be surveying?
I live kind of inbetween Elvington and Church Fenton so I often see planes buzzing around the sky however last week (Wed or Thurs) there was a different kind of noise, quite thunderous, sounded bigger than any jet provost I have heard but I could see anything due to the cloud cover. Thought they might have got the Vulcan working again.

Probably a typhoon/s. Quite the loudest thing the sky at the moment - considerably louder than the F-15 for example. First time they appeared over Helmsley they stopped everyone in the square because even at HA they were defeaning.I love the Typhoons and it makes me smile every time I see (and Hear) them in service over yorkshire. Fantastic aircraft.
It would be great to see them flying through the dales at low level rather then just seeing them at airshows and high over the North york moors. They seem to take off and then head for high altitude. They also appear to be ludicrously manouvreable! They seem to corner better than most cars.
The F15's at full chat are quite a bit louder then the typhoon at full power though! The typhoon is loud for sure 114dB (@1000ft full afterburner) but the EJ200's engines in them are smaller, quieter and only 61% thrust of the F15 engines (P&W F100's). The F15's bigger engines show in the noise that comes with them when on full A/B (121dB).
The F15 is noiser on standard mil power (no afterburner = 115db) at 1000ft then the Tyhpoon of full afterburner (114dB). The F15's can break windows at low altitude if they want to.
All this depends on where you are in realtion to the aircraft and how much power he is putting out.
Neither compares to the F35 though which is frankly painful and is only outvolumed by our lass when screaming along to x-factor.

sorry to bounce this back, but it's at it again today. Probably the last 20 minutes there has been rumbling, with it becoming louder and fainter.....anyone provide a definitive answer to this puzzle....as usual there is cloud cover so not much to see!!!!
