Any navigators looking for a run out?

They will use tulips, possibly herringbones, grid squares, spot hieghts and other map features. I've never seen anything criptic though its not necessary on these roads. You will be given the position of the end of each section as a map ref so if it all goes wrong you just cut that section and start the next.
The first half of this event is a tulip road book which is fairly straightforward though an accurate trip would be Usefull.
The second half is plot and bash which is harder. Main thing to watch is going otl ie running more than 15 minutes late, don't worry about running early on this section it won't happen!!. Get the route right first, even if it means stopping and studying it carefully. Not many can do p&b at any sort of speed and you will loose more time going off route than you would plotting it carefully then driving it..er .... Briskly!
It is a challenge, if it was easy the top guys would walk it, good results take time. I've been doing ilkley a 12 cars as a driver or a nav for six years now and my best result is 5th with a few class wins. I've had top tens and numerous class wins on national events with 60 odd car entries though. Those ilkley guys are bloody good!
Thanks Ian. The car is well sorted with decent Brantz trip, nav lights, everything possibly needed. The first half of this event is a tulip road book which is fairly straightforward though an accurate trip would be Usefull.

Sounds like they're a bloody decent challenge. I know how good some of the Ilkley lot are, in fact David Taylor is doing Throckmorton in a couple of weeks. I think he's already won the championship though! Fortunately he's in a different class to us - we're up against a 911 SC, Mk2 Escort, Mini Cooper etc.

Cheers, I don't have any up to date OS maps atm so will be starting again.
I just need to have a practice away from an event to see if I'm good enough,
I'm struggling to find a complete route for a 12 car, just a few loose handouts which would be useless as you wouldn't know where the start of the section was.I just need to have a practice away from an event to see if I'm good enough,
If you can give me an idea of which maps you have (old or not) I can try and find a route from a plot and bash night event for that area. I've got them across the country from east to west in a band from 96 to 101 and 102 to 107 that makes sense if you look at the sheets on the back cover of a landranger map.
I've got a few pre-polt routes too, but those tend to be just MR's and a direction so aren't representative.
Yes tricky that. As with all herringbones the key is knowing exactly where to start get that wrong and you are stuffed. From memory that one started in a layby with two exits, if you went out of the wrong one you end up a junction adrift which is what happened to us. In reality you go out on to the road you just came off and turn imeaditely right. Then of course there is pad side triangle to contend with!!
Personally I think that one was too tricky I know a lot of people came unstuck on it

Similar I guess. I'd expect Ed Graham's events to be faster but he has a curious way of timing stuff which makes a good result a bit of a lottery. I'd say ilkley's are more technical, basing this on a couple of Hexham historics which I think are just long versions of his 12 cars. Come down and have a go
If you're stuck for a navigator then I'll do some seat cover work for you. I'd prefer the seat to go to someone who is not already in the sport though as it's a brilliant way to get involved and once you know what it's all about, it's compellingly addictive. Could help a budding navigator out as well, or come along and make another team up if the numbers are low. Al, if you're thinking about it and worried about the navigation, I could give you some pointers.

That is a very kind offer, Dave, cheers.DH
I've got Jez (Yorkshire Pudding) who is keen but he can't do many of the upcoming dates though due to work. If you fancy a run out on the November 12 Car then it is on Nov 21st. I'd be well up for it.
We have a bit of a 12 car of our own which starts on 23 November so I'm afraid we'll be marking the maps up on 21st. The offer of help is still there if anyone fancies a go. It's been a while but I'm sure I could still work out a circular herringbone. (you don't know where to start or which way round to go. Piece of cake)
