Closure of Lendal Bridge in York
Discussion
Just to let people know, in case they've missed this gem.
York City Council have decided to shut the bridge, the one closest to the station, to all cars for a trial period of 6 months.
As you can imagine this is going to be a real issue for residents needing to cross town, to the hospital or station for example.
There is a petition pointing out the stupidity of this on the York council local gov website.
I'd encourage anyone to sign it, it takes 2 minutes, and may just make the clowns think again.

Just when you thought the Council couldn't do anything else stupid to mess up traffic flow in York, they come up with this! Astounding!
I can't wait for all the work to start on the new A59 Park and Ride and how that will impact on traffic along the Boroughbridge Road corridor into the City centre....
Don't the Council want the City to have any businesses active in the centre of town?
Now where is that petition.....
Andrew.

Aggh FFS, what a stupid idea. It will be a nightmare travelling from the North side of river to the station.
ETA Signed and thanks for raising it here.
Ditto the above.ETA Signed and thanks for raising it here.
And what a PITA this is going to be. And it's 7 days a week FFS!
CofY Council would seem to be run by numpties at the best of times. They move offices to Station Rise and forget about having a letter box, meaning any deliveries need to be taken during office hours. It's on order though............FFS!!
And not to mention the addition of the bus lane to Poppleton Road, another waste of money. They should be making good the crap road surfaces that all these buses and heavy vehicles destroy in the first place, FFS!
Can't find the petition, anyone got a linky please?

.....and after looking at the Council website, they are also extending the time limitations on Coppergate from 8.00 to 6.00pm to a ridiculous 7.00 to 7.00pm!
It will simply bring the remaining open roads to a standstill.
Trying to get from the west of town to the centre or east will be impossible.
And as for the Park and Ride ......what a waste of money that will be.....doing no more than introduce more buses and more congestion to the roads. As if there aren't enough arrogant bus drivers around already in York!

I really do believe that our council are the biggest bunch of fkwhits on the planet and nothing they do surprises me anymore.
When it comes to traffic management their buffoonery knows no bounds, we have worked with them so I know what they are like.
There is some similar tttery going on at Holgate, what's the betting they well and fanny up the junction, which will be just lovely for the empty park and rides buses and then have to re-do it in a years time.
This is why I no longer drive to work, beside the fact that there is no where to park, takes 30 mins on the cycle and it is the same every day. I no longer have to worry about the randomness of the council or traffic.

Allegedly, the councillor responsible doesn't even have a fecking driving licence. When it comes to traffic management their buffoonery knows no bounds, we have worked with them so I know what they are like.
Speaks volumes really

This is the bus lane I mentioned earlier. The one that's designed to knock 2 minutes off the journey time at peak times.Wizards at work!!
Sorry Leigh, I never read your post properly. Ha ha ha why do they insist on putting partial bus lanes on roads that aren't worth it?
The best one is the park & ride on Hull road, the lights on the lane is so crap that the buses don't use it.
They will be putting a traveller camp in museum gardens next, oh hang on...

It will completely knacker traffic.
Bootham is crap at the best of times, imagine how bad it will be with all that side of town's traffic.
They're not even proposing to make it a pedestrian, which, it could be argued, would enhance the area for tourists etc, they're just banning cars (but not taxis ) and bikes.
The Coppergate closure extension is stupid too, I live off St Andrewgate (off Kings Square) and it makes getting across town a much longer trip than it ought to be.

most councils are guilty of lunacy now and then, but not on this scale surely.
if the objective set was to cause maximum disruption to people trying to get anywhere within the city, then this would be about the single best thing to do
other than that, it is utter madness
I really can not see any potential benefit from this to any part of the city centre. Hey ho, more shoppers for monk's cross / designer outlet and less for city centre traders I suppose

This will make travelling around York impossible. All the traffic will funnel down Leeman Rd instead which is bad enough as it is anyway, especially around the old sorting office. To quote someone above "buffoonery". No wonder the city centre is on the decline, even more people will be driven to use the edge of town shopping centres where parking is free and its easy to access without sitting in traffic for an hour. Gah!
The whole city is a disgrace. You can't in or out at the best of times but to shut Lendal bridge?
Do these people even drive in York when making the decisions?
My favorite is trying to get out. Lawrence street to A64 at rush hour is painful as is Bootham and the ring road around Haxby.
