Rich, Appletreewick is a favourite for all of Lozza's Ilkley friends/family. They tend to head up there at least a couple of times each summer as a great place to take the kids. Ping her a message if you're thinking about heading there.

If you`re going to drive into York watch out for the `Lendal Bridge Restriction` which has caught literally thousands of visitors - most have paid the £60 fine so the city has made a fortune!

I have a small 2 bedroom house you could rent in Ampleforth if that would be of interest? It's about 20 minutes north of York on the southern edge of the Moors.

how old are the kids? just north of york is creepy crawlies - a soft play and outdoor adventure playground. greats stuff. get the lunch deal.

pickering has a steam train and a castle. nice.

not much in Malton really.

Fish n Chips at Thompsons on the A64 towards Scarborough - best this side of the seaside. The Four ALls is also great value about 100ydds further up the '64.

dalby forest drive (toll) (time it right for a rally!!), the walk up the BrideStones is good, some rocks to scramble on etc. 2-3 miles.

In Scarboro, park on south cliffe by the bandstand - it's free all day (go beyond the 2hr zone), a nice walk in to town/beach through valley gardens. getting back up the cliff is easy with the lift at the Spa -only 60p or so. dont pay to park!!

as an alternative to castles, seek out the nuclear command bunker at Acomb (york suburb), or an even bigger one at Holmpton on the holderness coast (and watch the road fall in the sea while you're there. some great hoon roads). ENd at Fort Paull on the humber and marvel at the Beverley.

Harrogate is pretty, and while youre there nip up to Brimham ROcks for a play on the weird formations.

Walk up the white horse at sutton bank, then helmsley castle and thebig house whose name escapes me. avoid helmsley sundays (unless you're a biker!)

Newby Hall, Brodsworth Hall, SLedmere Hall... Ripley Castle all worth a goosey.

Near York - Tockwith Park if you fancy some track day fun - hire allsorts!

visit Goathland if you're a heartbeat fan wink, and Grosmont has a nice little train museum and a tunnel. while you're there, walk down the hole of horcum, because it has a funny name!

Robin Hoods Bay is nice, but it's a poor man's Whitby (Dracula, 199 steps, beach, fudge, Jet jewellery, captain cook, whalebone arch, a trillion alleyways, snickets and stuff to explore, boat triips and stuff... and friday night in the Endeavour is live sea shanty night with the fishermen!)

Jolly days glamping at Stamford bridge is great not too far from York and then good access to the east coast.

Newby Hall great for that age. Stunning gardens and woodland they can play about in, small paddle boats to hire, great miniature train rides, adventure playground, play fountains etc. great if weather prevails.
