We are planning a trip up to Yorkshire in August (two adults and two young kids). It will entail walks, a bit of relaxation, and a trip to York (and surrounding castles) as the main highlights.

Does anyone have any recommendations on locations and accommodation?

A Hote/B&B in York with free parking might be your best bet. Gives you a good base to go and explore and you won't get stung with parking charges in York.

Thanks for the tips.

For me, staying in York makes sense, but it's out of town the my wife fancies.

True camping is out, but a spot away from the hubbub isn't a bad call - in a cabin perhaps.

If you want a luxury woodland lodge/cabin, Griffon Forest is ideally located about 8 miles north of York. There is a 18 hole golf course on site with driving range etc. Also a restaurant on site. It's only a 15 minute drive from Castle Howard as well, and 40 minutes from the coast (scarborough / Filey)

Not cheap though, especially August, http://www.griffonforest.co.uk/home.html

or

Cheaper lodges here 2 miles from York http://www.yorklakesidelodges.co.uk/Introduction.h...

If you want to stop on the coast have a look at Staithes, north of Whitby.

Get a cottage in the village, play on the beach and go crabbing in the harbour, my daughter loves it.

If your budget is up to it:

B&B from £195!

They even do expensive 'glamping':

Some lovely places. One or two of which are a little out of my reach financially.

A couple of days around York then Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay (definitely worth it if the weather is good). Then maybe a day exploring the Dales, Aysgarth Falls and so on.

Staithes is a great spot.

I'd also recommend the Elerby Hotel in Elerby. Even if you don't stay there its worth it going along for some food. Theres also a Holiday cottage there you could rent out. Its also very near my childhood home of Runswick Bay which has one of the best beaches in the area.

If your kids watch CBeebies, then they'll recognise Staithes as the village where they filmed 'Old Jacks Boat' with Bernard Cribbins.
Runswick is our seaside destination of choice on a nice day (get there early if you want to park though).

Both a fair distance from York though...

no requirement to be a rail enthusiast, just something different and affordable. About 6 miles south of York in lovely countryside.

Don`t go to the `York Dungeon` - it`s really nasty. If it`s a fine day & the kids are little an hour feeding peanuts to the squirrels in the Museum gardens would be fun (and cheap). The last time I was at the Railway Museum I enjoyed it but it`s not that interactive & kids get bored with it easily - apart from the shop of course...
Walking round the city walls is great fun & you can take some great photos.
For a good sandwich I`d recommend Mr Poundwich in the Shambles where a sandwich is a pound - if you`re starving get 2.
Have a lovely time!

Rich, Appletreewick is a favourite for all of Lozza's Ilkley friends/family. They tend to head up there at least a couple of times each summer as a great place to take the kids. Ping her a message if you're thinking about heading there.
