Silly question but has anybody been flashed by the variable speed limit cameras on the m62 when no speed is been shown ever herd anything? A mate of mine at work had this happen to him

No but I've seen it happen on that stretch, I believe they will activate above a certain speed regardless of the limit in force.

I would imagine he'll be getting a ticket, I always keep it to a maximum of an indicated 80 through there.

I have heard rumours - nothing confirmed, that if they are not showing a limit you will not get a ticket, but they just flash.

Can't believe those are active at 70 all the time because there would be uproar going on....

It's a very carefully worded statement, saying that "the Highways Agency has now confirmed the new £150m overhead gantry system between Huddersfield and Leeds CAN catch speeding motorists, even when it is not being used to slow the traffic."

However, they don't say they ARE being used, just that they CAN be used. Which they can be. But they aren't.

And do you think the HA would publicly state that they aren't being used, when they can use weasel words to put fear into people so as not to stray over the limit?

Evidence in the thread I posted to earlier indicates that although they may flash, tickets aren't actually being issued.

They're not in my experience but I wouldn't go under them at 90+

When they first opened the "managed motorway" there was a bit of willy waving going on with the boys and their new toy. It was flashing at about 80 leptons I got flashed myself but never got a ticket. The ones down near Leicester dont trigger at 90 leptons so I would be surprised if ours do now the dust has settled.

My understanding is they dont trigger but if the chief inspector or whoever is in a bad mood they can be activated.

Anyway if you can drive to the posh expensively maintained motorways without damaging your car severely in a pothole on one of our creaking A roads on the way you deserve to be able to speed a bit wink

I found myself in the company of a senior member of WYP's traffic division recently. He suggested that the cameras operated during NSL periods and not during reduced limit periods.

During one of my forays down south for Goodwood, I was passing along the M25 deep into the night at approximately the NSL. Without warning, one of the gantries flashed up '20' to a motorway devoid of all traffic except for an idiot in a Lotus. I elected to slow to the advised limit immediately. I would guess it was some muppet in a control tower having a laugh.

Either way, I tend to obey just in case. The implications of a transgression don't really fit the benefit of 70>50 or 90>70 or whatever for me.

Oh, and just as an aside, I think it's a slightly facile argument to suggest a motorist has been duped into disobeying the speed limit because no additional restrictions are in place. We know the limit and could be picked up by a traffic officer at any moment; quite apart from static cameras.

I've seen them flash twice (the classic, you've been collared sign) quite a lot. I've also ploughed through them on a bike at speed and not had a ticket. Nor do I know anyone who's had a ticket.

The speed limit is clearly defined. There are speed cameras. IF the speed cameras were working, and you were speeding you would get points and a fine. Why would you take the risk?

That stretch on the M62 ? I have points and I don't want more. No wait. that was 31 may 2011. I don't have points. I'd take the risk.
