I thought you were going to say the bridge fiasco.

Then I realised who you were talking about.

To be honest they don't even need extra vans this weekend alone I saw a van and two cars all trying to catch speeders. Between that and the previous weekend in north wales I've seen my fair share of police pointing speed guns at me.

Last week I went from Wetwang to Driffield on Sunday and Wednesday.

On Sunday there was a camera van and on Wednesday a cop with a speed gun.

Both times cars, van, lorries and bikes flashed to warn me thumbup

Being a responsible person and not wanting anyone to kill kittens etc. I also flashed other road users wink

But it seems that tractors with a trailer loaded with grain (wonder what the weight is?) doing well over the 30mph limit is fine.

Three new mobile safety camera vans were also approved, after research showed that North Yorkshire Police had fewer enforcement resources compared with other similar-sized forces. The vans will come into service in spring next year, and will be used to tackle a whole range of anti-social road use, including speeding, dangerous behaviour and use of mobile phones whilst driving.
How are those vans going to do anything other than sit in the hedgerow catching careless speeders? mad

Not unexpectedly, the PH-public's views from their survey were completely discounted then... earsrolleyes

"Community speed watch scheme"

Nowt more bonkers than this. Elderly bods with a borrowed speed gun, telling plod you're speeding, then plod writes you a snotty letter.

All well and good but, one day, some nutter will get angry and assault the old girls.

Where does that leave plod, who ought to have seen the problem coming, but didn't?

If this aspect is correct its a rapid turn around. Some officers I know have had this turned down in the recent past despite citing usage in other counties - not by senior officers but by the NYP Legal Department. Apparently concerned by litigation that may arise against NYP caused by the action of others.

Do these vans mean extra areas covered, or just the usual blank cheque locations covered even more often. At least we know where they are - although some of their ''black spot'' status is questionable.

Guess I'll be changing location of where I drive/ride.

Catching people on phones would be good, as would catching MLM's, but not quite sure how a static van will help with that?!

Oh well, sounds like the lad who lives over the road from me who maintains these vehicles is safe in his job for a while!

Park on a motorway bridge & film all the MLMs & drivers on their phones? Like they do now but with a useful outcome.

"The North Yorkshire Police area has a road network covering some nine thousand kilometers, and according to police records, more than 8,000 people were killed or injured on York and North Yorkshire’s roads between 2010 and 2012 alone."

Proper creativity in the writing of this. No one talks kms over here - but gives a bigger number for added drama. "More than 8,000" and "killed" in the same sentence, good work, might catch a speed reader or two. Between 2010 and 2012? Nice and vague. Could be as little as 14 months but it'll be the full 36 months.

Lies, damned lies and statistics?

This is interesting data:

I used to handle a lot of data analysis stuff but must admit I found the last table rather baffling. If I was a local biker I`d stop reading the local paper straight away.

Looking at where it happened, I would say the scamera pulled out from where it hides at the side of the road/hedge and into the path of the corsa. They love parking it in stupid places so you can't spot them till it's too late. Guess the flip side of their logic is they can't see up the road when pulling back out!

Surprised more hasn't been made of this in the press. Would make an interesting story.

So they introduce cameras, then deaths go up 65%, so they introduce 3 more.

It's a shame, they were last to introduce cameras and one of the safest places around, then the greed took over and people are paying with their lives.

I really hope the van was at fault, I bet the driver never has to face charges though...

Since the 'Safety' Scamera van was involved in the 'incident', I have not seen any others on the B1257 (Helmsley/Stokesley Road) and I commute along there twice a day.

Hmmmmm...

It's a sign!!!!! (until the 3 new ones roll out hehe)

I really don't get the issue with them? Speeding is illegal, if we get caught then it's our own fault.

They even tell us where they're putting them!
