They aren't only around at rush hour. Last Sunday two were out on the A64 between Tadcaster and Hull Road at 8.00am. Nothing else on the road.

Have no problem with the two guys who sat with tripod mounted kit in the 30 zones though.

They were on the Heslington flyover A64 today at 1pm.
Shame on them. Fish in a barrel!

So you're ok with breaking speed limits as long as its not a 30?

They were at the bottom of Barton Hill this morning too. It is too easy for them.

Even the police are taught to drive in limits (30, 40 etc) to that limit. When a limit ends its GLF!

Bull. If you want to speed just say so. This mitigation that NSL doesn't apply due it once being unlimited 60 years ago is ridiculous.
You can of course pick and choose what laws you follow, what you can't do is convince me your reasoning is sound. I doubt you could convince a speed camera either.

Ps that's not directed at anybody inparticular, more the idea that ringed limits are law and NSL is irrelevant.

I believe I just did.

I just think that 30 and 40 are there for a very good reason. Outside of that, conditions dictate what is reasonable. I make the choice and if caught, moan like hell about it biglaugh

That list of possible locations is ridiculous and completely against the spirit of advertising where they are going to be. They only have 3 vans and I think I counted 92 locations when I looked last week, on just about every stretch of A road and good B road in the county. It basically says 'we could be anywhere'.

2 weeks ago they were on the B6479 near Ribblehead (Horton road) catching bikers on a straight towards the junction. Fortunately I was going in the opposite direction so just exiting the bends when I clocked them. To be fair, there were a LOT a walkers on the road further down where the 3 Peaks trail crosses the roads but you wouldn't know that at the point of the van location.

Does anyone know what time of day they set up/go home??
Come to Cumbria, they just operate "anywhere" that they can park and snipe at people!

Interested by this discussion though as N Yorks was always one of the "sensible" areas prior to 2013 frown

The spreadsheets make for interesting reading - you can tell they have some sneaky spots on the A19 and A64 as their highest figures are on these stretches.

And what is with some of the "community concern" sites... A65 Settle Bypass for example is a straight well-sighted road incorporating a long climbing lane section isn't it? The only "concern" there should be letting people get on with it!

North Yorks isn't a mine field at all . I do a lot of recreational driving from Wolds to Dales as well as my own patch on the Moors and in the last five years I have encountered a camera four times - and two of those occasions were absolutely where a camera should be - mid week in villages with 30 limits and schools .
To be fair, the majority of their locations and time is spent on the major trunk roads of the area where there a regular serious accidents; A64, A59, A61, A19, A170. Of course, the fact they can collect £100 every 3 minutes from someone wandering down a duel carriageway at 75mph helps too...

I'm by no means defending the cynicism of this income stream, but the upside is that despite some presence on some of the best driving routes in the area, like the A684 through Wensleydale and the B roads downs to Ribblehead, there are relatively few locations to worry about and their prosecution rate is much lower. And there are plenty of other hooning roads in the area which don't feature on their list at all

The spreadsheet does at least make their deployment transparent. I've begun to make a POI file of the most relevant locations to me. Humberside, covering a chunk of East Yorkshire/a Wolds just publish "vans at any of our locations" for their weekend sessions. Haven't looked at Cumbria's website yet, as I don't get up that far anywhere near as much as I'd like these days frown

Ha ha, I wouldn't bother looking at the Cumbria website as it contains no useful information whatsoever. It would be very interesting if they did publish the data like in North Yorks as I bet the site data would basically read "M6" most of the time, they like shooting fish in a barrel up here!

I would love NYP to publish a graph of KSI figures in the county showing the trend before and after the introduction of cameras, whilst at the same time showing the number of marked roads policing cars on the county's roads. I am pretty sure it would make very embarrassing reading.
You can download their results spreadsheet from here: http://www.northyorkshire.police.uk/10951. It's not going to be particularly useful because it is lacking context (i.e. how it compares against roads before/without camera vans logging speeders) but it should at least tell you which spots they frequent most or which spots are the most lucrative.

Wow, when you dig into those stats you can see what a money making operation it is. Top spot seems to be A19 Southbound Kilvington nr Thirsk. In just over 4 hours of operations they racked up 226 speed awareness courses and 45 £100 fine and three point offences.

The A19 near me at Thirsk is indeed a happy hunting ground , and a cash cow as it is not an especially dangerous road with the majority of summer time shunts being caused by people who don't seem to understand that tractors and combines rarely do 70mph.. Possibly the same group who can't spot a parked up white Transit with a camera in it.

Interestingly I drove past one on the A168 near Boroughbridge (dishforth end) last night, and it isn't listed on the NYP website as a registered location.

Anyone else had this?

Yes, the A168 between Dishforth and Wetherby(ie the old A1 , now single carriageway) gets the occasional visit . It's a popular route for recreational driving at weekends . And (I am told)it is possible to maintain quite a healthy rate of knots on it , especially early mornings .My Seven has never ventured over 60 on it of course.
