Do people from Yorkshire take pride in being rude and tight?

Its like a badge of honour to be proud to 'call a spade a spade' and 'you spent how much?!'

All my family are from, and live in, Yorkshire for some reason it strikes me as some form of geographical trait.

Yep we're tight, or rather we know the value of money.

It's hard eared and hard spent.

If a Yorkshireman drops a £1 it will often hit him on the back of the head on the way down.

But we have some of the best countryside in the world, our women can carry a pig under each arm and still do a days work. wink

As for rude, no, we are probably some of the most friendly people you could ever meet.

I wasn't born there, didn't grow up there and have never lived there so not really.

I know loads of Yorkies, as a rule they are friendly, proud, hard working and principled, often appear blunt but are really just plain spoken with less chance of being two faced than many.

As for the idea that they are just Scotsmen without the charm and that copper wire was discovered by two Yorkshiremen fighting over a penny I have always found them very generous to people they know.

OTOH, whilst admitting that God might not live in Yorkshire, they claim he goes there for his holidays as the scenery is better than in heaven.

Forgot balance, Yorkies are particularly picky about t'ale they sup and owt brewed further than 20 miles from their house is deemed p***watter, the only time a Yorkie will drink foreign beer is when it is free, even then they'll complain about it, all neet.

Compared to most people I've seen in that south, we're all like Mother Teresa's carer.

Trouble is - Yorkshire is a very big place. Both people and accents vary hugely from , say, Barnsley , Sheffield ,Hull, Whitby , Hawes , Leeds, High Bentham ,Helmsley , Stokesley and Bradford . The cartoon stereotype Yorkshireman probably has a strong Leeds accent but the place is a lot more nuanced than that alone.

There's only one thing tighter than a Scotsman....

But rude, no.

I do cringe when people get a bit over lovey dovey about the place though, it has some lovely countryside but there is a plague of utter disease ridden scum here too.

That's quite ignorant.

Presumably you also think all scousers are robbers with curly hair and a tash. What a broad-minded view of the world you have.

Apart from to be insulting, your point is?

Oh I'm just calling a spade a spade, it's not rude remember, it's called being a straight talker..

It's not a point being made, it's a question.

So, do people from Yorkshire take pride in it?

We see it at numerous times on here where there's a self reference to Yorkshire and I am unsure why a reference to thoughts on cash or being a straight talker in a negative way is slanted as a positive - hence asking if there's a pride factor in it.

If it's not true then why be offended?...

Not pride but that is just the way we are, and if people don't like it we are not really bothered. Take it or leave it, better to be genuine.

Not true.

The rest of them are Union reps with curly hair and a tash.

Rural people in general seem to take a perverse pride in being ignorant, rude, un-ambitious, narrow-minded and mean. They also seem curiously content to speak with accents that only accentuate their stupidity.

I come from Norfolk originally and all the traits said of Yorkshire apply equally there
