sorry for the dumb question but what do these speed cameras do exactly?

They constantly film the road, tracking speed, ANPR reg numbers, and also from what I can gather things like vehicle spacing too.

It'll all be centrally logged/tagged data too.

So really it's the ultimate road/vehicle spying tool, that also checks speeds of vehicles against the current variable limit.

When they become widely recognised, press-on drivers will be standing on the brakes before the gantry, then off again. You can't see the cameras in the dark, so such antics will be performed approaching every gantry, just in case.

How, exactly, is that supposed to enhance safety?

The cynic in me says some bod in the Highways Agency is trying to make a name for himself and I have to wonder if they sneaked this past government in general costings for conversion to "smart" motorways.

As far as I'm aware these cameras film way before/after the gantries and don't require road markings. Might be wrong though.

I'm fairly sure you're right too.

Personally I just stick the cruise control on now and go with the flow in L1 because once you're in these 'controlled' zones the other traffic is driving so oddly in L2/3 that it makes making progress at ~ 70mph nigh on impossible.

The only thing I've not been keen on is the ones around Birmingham and the M25 at times, which just swap from no limit to say 50mph all of a sudden at times. Not ideal and kinda dangerous!

I go through that section every Monday at around 5.45am, I set the cruise to an indicated 80-83mph and I've never been flashed. (variable limit not in force)

I'm not the only one travelling at that speed so if they really wanted to "do us" then I'd have been done ages ago.

The HADECS2 cameras above the lanes don't work at all, ie. don't work as in not nailing you for exceeding speed limit. I have been travelling in vehicles on that stretch that have been doing well over a ton so I can say this with 100% certainty. They do occasionally flash but that's all they do.

The new HADECS3 cameras sat on the shelf at the side of the gantry are too new to know for sure, but judging by the number of speeding cases posted on pepipoo by people that have been caught by the one on the M25 Clackett Lane when no temporary limit was displayed, I'm inclined to believe that the new ones on the M62 are probably set up the same way although I've not personally seen any of them flash yet.

I'll take your word for it, but I'm not testing the theory! biggrin

I reckon none of them are on yet and will all go through testing together once they are all installed. I'm not testing my theory though either! I'm fairly certain we'll see a lot of threads on here and pepipoo confirming when they do go live though.

The new one eastbound between 27 and 28 was under test last night by a bunch of contractors. Was flashing everything that went past it, including me eek. Some other contractors were working on the one on the opposite carriageway too.

They sucker MP's into signing off on speed cameras which when completed round the UK will be switched over to the pay as you go driving system.

At least they are not dangerous like lone speed cameras, they only cause bunching up, people driving side by side, tailgating and miles and miles of inattention.

They were being tested two years ago on the M1 near Luton. I think testing will be over now.

I'm talking about the testing of the actual install not the type approval...

The 4th camera gantry is now installed and (presumably) working. It's westbound just on the downhill bit after the M621 merges.

There's a 5th one now being installed westbound just before Hartshead Moor services. frown

My understanding is that there is a camera on a single post about 200m before the picture on this post and they work together. I am guessing that they are moving to these are they are more discrete (especially at night) and there is no requirement for road closures to maintain them as they are off the carriage ways!

There is. You can clearly see it before each of the gantries that has the new HADECS3 cameras fitted. It's a post with 3 CCTV-style cameras mounted side by side with about 6" between them.

Just a quick heads up if you're heading down the M6...

Four of these have appeared (in both directions) in the new 'managed motorway' sections between J13 & J10A

Don't think they're live yet but I imagine they will be when it becomes 'managed'

Oh, and there won't be a hard shoulder between J13 & where the M6 Toll splits off!

confused They're not live yet as they haven't even finished the wiring for them. Are you sure it wasn't the SPECS average speed cams that got you instead?
