Anyone live in Whitby or Scarborough?

Hello,
My wife and I are looking to relocate to the North Yorkshire coast from South Oxfordshire. We've spent a fair amount of time in Whitby and like it, and looked at good few houses and have got the wheels in motion with regarding moving. However, is there anywhere else to consider?
In one of our trips to the north we spent a few nights in Scarborough in the South Cliff area and liked it too, so, after having a quick look on rightmove are entertaining going back up and taking a look at some properties there.
Are there areas of Scarborough to avoid?
Are there other coastal towns to look at?
We are definitely set on being coastal, and in Yorkshire, but that's about it...

I went through a similar search when looking at the North Yorkshire coast. I bought a place at South Cliff behind the Esplanade. I looked at Robin Hoods, Bridlington and Filey. Mine and my wifes reasoning was that there was more to do at Scarborough than the other options. We use it at weekends as we live in York and have been thrilled with it. The South side does seem to be quieter in the summer.
Southcliffe is the nicest area of Scarborough in my opinion. Some decent shops on Ramshill Road (Including the best Pizza take-away I've ever found) and some nice gardens along the Esplande and its right next to the sea. Failing that, Scalby and Newby arn't bad. A bit further out Osgodby, Cayton and Burniston are nice.
Just stay away from Eastfield, Barrowcliffe and most of the streets with terraced housing on and you'll be fine.
Filey and Brid are both the backend of nowhere IMO. Scarborough and Whitby have a lot more history/character to them. Whitby has come on leaps and bounds since I grew up there, but all four are still really cul-de-sacs by the coast. Great if you want to get away from it all, a pain if you want to tavel and do things.
Scarborough has the more facilities (shops etc) than the others by some way. Its night life is also slightly better as it gets more tourists and there is a small University campus in the town that adds a diversity you wouldn't normally see in a town that small.

Both are tourist hell holes.
Scarborough is for the chavs of Yorkshire who can't be arsed trekking over to Blackpool. Whitby is lovely but on high days and holidays it's absolutely chokka and none of its' many pleasures would tempt me to live there. If you're prepared to move inland, even if only a couple of miles, you open up a swathe of beautiful villages within striking distance of Whitby, which you can then visit whenever you want. And you really would not want to visit Whitby on a bank holiday if the sun is shining*
*by car. top tip: get the train - no parking worries and freedom to explore more of the charming little hostelries dotted around town

Thanks for the advice so far. The main driving force behind it is being coastal, without going into too much detail sea air is what we're moving for!
The places in Whitby we've liked are on the outskirts, and by the sounds of things the south cliff area of Scarborough is definitely worth more consideration!

For the sea we now pop over to Hornsea or any of the little beach access points to the South. Hornsea really is just a little seaside town with no pretensions, `Outlet centre` is to be avoided. There is boating on the mere & long walks on the beach are always nice, with a cup of tea at the Floral Hall of course. Prices are low. A few miles inland maybe lower but some pretty villages. Beverley for shopping, Hull for anything major industrial or car servicing/buying. Spurn Point if you want to get to the back of beyond. Good luck!

I lived on South Cliff for 4 years and that's where I'd live again. I've got friends that live there and often stay, once a month or so. If you need any help give me a shout, as I said I'm up there often.
I grew up in Grosmont and went to school in Whitby, so know the area well. I also have a brother who lives in Scarborough. While it is OK and cheaper than Whitby, Whitby has more character and charm about it. Depends on what you want from where you live. As mentioned above, Sandsend would get my vote.
I moved to Oxford for my first job, after university. While Oxford was great, I missed the North Yorkshire Moors and coast as its one huge playground for my cars, motorbikes and push bikes. I moved back in 2001 and never regretted it. I initIally moved to Yarm for its bars, restaurants, clubs, women, nightlife and because it was an affluent market town. Now I am married and settled down, I love living and working in North Yorkshire.

I lived on the South Cliff for 10 years, Prince of Wales Terrace, and am going to move back there in the new year, the middle of York is lovely but we're missing the sea.
I'd stick to the Esplanade, PoW Terrace etc, Esplanade Gardens end rather than the St Martin's Square / Albion Road area

We're in Sandsend and yes, it's lovely. However, there are some much nicer (and cheaper) places inland. I'd be looking at Egton and that kind of area on the edge of the moors. If you can find a property!

My old man lives just outside Scarborough and now spends his time either walking the dog on the beach or fishing on the mere. Says he wishes he'd done it years ago, although does tend to avoid the place on a weekend because of traffic/tourists. Got to admit, having driven to Scarborough fairly regularly for most of my adult life, there's a quiet side to it that's genuinely lovely that I only discovered when he moved up there. I try to get up and stay there for a weekend with him now whenever I can.
