Personally I think the obsession with speed cameras above motorways or the vans such as the ones on the A64 is just dangerous. The other week me and the family went up to Scarborough for a couple of days. On my way there I focussed on the road and may have drifted above 70mph once in a while but was very aware of what was happening on the road for as far as I could see.

By the time I was nearly home the following day I'd passed a total of 5 scamera vans!!! And my focus was by then reduced to my speedo and a few cars ahead.

Just for the hell of it and was bored I counted all the cameras between M1 Jcnt 26 and Jcnt 32 where it meets the M18.

Having just driven through Northampton area where there where no cameras of any type for miles there was also clean flowing traffic and it was easy to concentrate on just the other traffic and suspect fewer accidents.

So the tally is and includes gantry cameras, average cameras and traffic monitoring cameras.

100 x individual Speed Scameras including gantry cameras and average speed cameras.

135 x Traffic Monitoring Cameras.

16 x New Hadecs 3 Scameras

This Includes North and South Bound and is a total of over 250 individual cameras on a relatively short stretch when there are Zero for 10s of miles further south,

I can't help but think that someone is on the take from the Scamera companies as it's simply ridiculous in such a small area, and the traffic all gets bunched up and you spend your life concentrating on your 50 or 70 speed and less on the cars around you with people braking as they go past them.

I'm pretty sure there are more accidents caused by these than they prevent!!!!!!

I got flashed about a month ago on the M1 NB just before J40. (Was going just a tad over 80). No ticket has turned up, so I'm guessing it was just a bedding in stage or non enforcement of NSL

Does anyone know if the cameras on the new smart section at J31 to J28 are working? Haven't seen any flashes yet, but stupidly last week I like an idiot didn't register the 50 on the new gantries, must have passed 4 or 5 at least. There was no traffic so unsure why they were on, the roadworks seem to have gone too, no yellow average cameras.

I have spoken to Highways who said the road opens fully on 13th March and last week J29 to J28 were using the gantries, this week J30 to J29, he did say in the first week they were synchronising.

Not received anything through as yet, I went through on 4th March.

I have heard that due to an effort to reduce emissions the sections through Chesterfield and Sheffield will be speed reduced permanently!

They got knocked back when trying to put the 60mph limit in to reduce pollution caused by lorries - yes you couldn't make it up - so spent a year with it at 50 to downgrade the motorways to 'smart' ones, which usually are set at 60 for the hell of it, and down right dangerous when set at 50 or 40.

I drive from Leeds to Manchester every day. I'll be happy when they finish road works after Milnrow.

I have been flashed by one of the new gantrys although they was 24/12/2013 at 85 (tut tut) but nothing ever came through. Now I stick to 70 through those and also watch out for the new hadecs they have installed.

Other than that I think the managed motorway works, I remember quing from the Bradford junction to the top of the m621 but that never happens anymore. Just finish it already!

I drove up the M1 and along the M62 from the A43 junction last night, it was like a scene from a dystopian film, bloody awful, constant smart sections and road works were they are creating more smart sections, just dreadful.

The hard concrete central reservation doesn't help matters either, a seamless grey vision with thousands of cameras and signs telling you what to do and when to do it, speed restrictions in force for no visible reason, people unsure as to whether they could use the hard shoulder or not etc...

Doesn't stop the tailgating, poor lane discipline and general fkwittery though....

Hi mate.
What time of day do you travel? This will also be my daily commute in a few months.
I'm really not looking forward to the queues at the m62/m60 junction.
Any tips?

I recently drive this section and noticed the mahoosive new boards on the left which on the way back displayed a speed limit of a big 50 in Orange numbers with red circle and another triangle next to it with incident.

I've never seen what appear to be advisory speed limit signs with red borders before so slowed down with maybe 3 or 4 others did with everyone else continuing at normal speed and flashing all those who slowed. Next to these signs are tall poles with a angled camera looking each way.

There was no cameras on the rear of these massive boards just these tall poles next to them. Were those cameras for monitoring the traffic to inform the board info?

The overhead gantry ones were in force on a variable basis and bonged on the old tomtom which were duly observed but these new ones surprised me and I went through slightly above because it was literally dangerous to go any slower even on far left with the lorries.

Then when I googled it I got loads of info about these Hadecs3 ones that they've apparently stuck on some of gantries - assume when the tomtom was bonging with nothing in the gantries it was probably these?

Why does no-one put in a freedom of information request for the way they have gotten their cameras programmed?

Sorry only just seen this. Early doors is best. If you can be on there for 6.30 you're onto a winner. It's a fker whenever you do to be honest!

My advice. Set your alarm half an hour earlier and give yourself more time and accept the fact that roads are not going to be the place to rush about or enjoy any more, and spend the money you save in fuel and no fines on a comp license and some track tyres. It's the only way you're going to enjoy driving in the future.

Cruise set at 70! Welcome to the future.

I used to think this about traffic lights in Sheffield. In some places theres literally 50 yards between crossings. When our roads are in such awful condition you really have to question the value of so many lights. Inwas once told a councillors wife was on the board of a traffic management company but never found any proof.

Would love to know actual information regarding the new cameras on m1 jnc 31 - 28. Had a debate on the way to phss santa pod regarding if they were actually on.

When I worked between Malton and Scarborough, I could always tell when they wherte expecting lots of holiday traffic. Every Scamera Van would be out and pointed at Eastbound traffic on the Friday, and Westbound traffic on the monday.

Although not in the Yorkshire section, the HADECS3 camera on the M1 northbound just after Tibshelf is definitely now live and enforcing temporary speed limits. Over the past week I've seen it go off loads of times, even at truckers doing barely more than 5mph above the posted limit (ie. 55/56 mph when 50 limit displayed). Whether people are being issued with tickets I have no idea til someone posts one. I've not seen any of the ones between J42-39 flash yet so they might not have wired them up yet.

I was on the M1 last night and have seen those cameras at the side of the gantry go off a few times. There was no limit on the boards either, which means no speeding at all on the M1 between Sheffield and Nottingham! They're now live all of the time.

So.. sorry, but you'll all have to stop looking at the road for a good 40 miles on the M1 as its much safer on your license to look at your speedo instead! grumpy

And don't for a second think, 'oh its midnight and there's nothing on the road so I'll do 80mph to get home quicker rather than dropping to sleep at the wheel' because you'll get shafted!

My experience is that 80mph is OK past those cameras, but I agree it's a farce hence I use the A1 whenever possible.

I wonder, the fact that it's mostly a dual carriageway rather than 3 or 4 lanes hopefully curtails some of their bothersome ambition.
