Leeds doesn't even make the top 50 (at least from that extract)

There are swathes of stty areas. There are swathes of pleasant areas. Same as any city and I don't see the proportion to be anything beyond average in Leeds.
I wouldn't class a year of living in the Basra end of the city as being representative. The same way I wouldn't class a year living in Alwoodley and drinking only on Street Lane.

Lived there for 10 years, in Horsforth, left in 2010. Loved Leeds, and although some of the drives in the countryside are great, the road quality in Leeds is beyond awful. I got really sick of it shaking st out of my golf. When I go back to visit friends, it's the one thing that I will never miss.
As I got older my visits to the bars etc. in the centre got less and less, as they're nearly all packed. If you're into that kind of thing, great, but I got sick of pushing through crowds to go to the bogs etc. But that's because I've become a curmudgeon. Taxis are a free-for-all as well at end of the night.

Taxis are pretty good I'd say and Uber then adding to the already plentiful Amber et al has only helped and kept prices very cheap. As a Southerner I was staggered at the cost of taxis (and availability) when I moved up here. Less than a fiver across the city...unheard of. Back home it was £5 - £6 on the clock before setting off and the 8 mile trip back to my house from the city centre was £20 - £25. Here if a can is more than a tenner I almost faint..
The roads, sadly, have not improved. They are a right state and a lot worse than many other cities I have spent time in. Again, something else I noticed when I moved here. When I had my (very low modified) Exige it was an absolute nightmare. Even main roads can have craters almost capable of hiding in.

But that's a huge part of the city.
And near the ring road...depends where. Seacroft? Swarcliffe?
I struggle to think of a city where I can name such a huge number of absolutely ste, dangerous areas.
Clearly you aren't familiar with Manch, Liverpool or Birmingham. Gipton and Harehills are to Leeds as Crocky and Tocky are to Liverpool and Moss Side and Hulme are to Manchester. Same goes for any city. And near the ring road...depends where. Seacroft? Swarcliffe?

It is quite nice up on Altofts at the moment, although it used to be much nicer before they built the the industrial estate next to the M62, (which is noisy pretty much 24/7) and most of the rest of the housing around Normanton is ex-mining workers terraces. Which is perfectly decent in a salt-of-the-earth kinda way, but it never really recovered from the closure of the mines.Oh yes, I forgot to mention. the green land in the valley to the west is shortly to be (massively) developed with large industrial warehousing. Next to which will be several thousand
If I had £300K I wouldn't be living there, and I suspect the above reasons are why it is up for sale now.
I was going to say, anyone complaining about the Leeds has not travelled much in Sheffield.
Truly, truly appaling.
Last week driving from Hillsbrough up to Rivelin I was reduce to <30mph at one point weaving and dodging, on a 50mph road. In a Jag with jelly suspension and 65 profile tyres!

Thanks for that.
Thank you PH people of Yorkshire.
I've been offered the job in Leeds. Although I live in a village, which I love, I'm looking at the idea of a city centre flat. If I lived somewhere like Leeds Dock I could literally go downstairs and go to work. Seems very tempting after a few years of cross London commuting....

Love Leeds, biased as someone that's always lived here, but I travel round quite a bit and no other city beats it for me. Nice compact city centre, close to the countryside, traffic isn't too bad (compared to other cities)
Living wise, I personally wouldn't go city centre, somewhere like Apperley Bridge or Horsforth with a 10 min train ride is much more appealing

The dock is a nice area, I can guess where you must be off to and it's a nice area to work in. Easy walk into the centre of Leeds and if you like swords and stuff it's convenient I've been offered the job in Leeds. The commute in to there is relatively pleasant as most people are going the other way once you get to a certain point so I wouldn't be too concerned about having to commute in via car, it's certainly not at grid lock by any means during rush hour.
Leeds has its problems but I've been here 4 years and while I'm looking at moving a bit further out its a great balance, you'll enjoy the roads up here too
I wouldn't want to over-state the commuting problems. I suspect I could get to Leeds centre from York in the time it takes to cross the middle of London! If I were a student or an early 20-something, then I'd go for a city-centre flat in an instant. Mates close by, lots of bars, convenient for the day job. Beyond that though, I don't think I would bother. Leeds isn't a mega-metropolis, so although there is stuff to do, it really isn't enough to sustain a 24/365 lifestyle the way London is.
If you do have a look around some city apartments I'd love to hear what you think of them though.

I work at Leeds Dock! If you are looking for somewhere around there, I would personally go with Roberts Wharf as opposed to the new build flats there - character building finished in a new York loft style over looking the water. Literally 2 min from Leeds Dock.
To get you in the mood for moving, have some food/drink ideas...
Food
Red BBQ. Not that far from the dock. Awesome.
The Reliance. Great Gastropub.
Hansas (near the Reliance) - Gujarati vegetarian.
Drinks
Brewery Tap near the station (microbrewery)
The Victoria (old school pub)
Whitelocks (ditto)
Gin - The Gin Garden at the New Ellington
Coffee
La Bottega Milanese. The sheer amount of Italian being spoken by staff and customers is the guide...
