This is all useful stuff! Thanks!

Depressing that it sounds like it'll be 2.5 hours+ to get from Doncaster to Halifax - Google reckons 1 hr 10 in Monday traffic (it's meant to have learnt traffic behaviour etc) frown

...
If you are taking that from my post that was both ways smile so it seems Google agrees with my estimate give or take

Oh! That's not so bad! I'm having to pay 12k and sit on a train for 4 hours a day so an hours drive each way should be ok for her smile

We could be back on for Doncaster! So far places we've looked at on rightmove are Bawtry and Tickhill, the only thing I've been warned about is to check flood plains for those areas. Does that sounds about right?

Bawtry and Tickhill are nice areas, you could potentially get a train from Retford to London.

Yes the other half is from that area originally (another reason to look around Doncaster) but Retford has recently lost some of its regular trains and it's probably just that bit too far from Halifax otherwise we'd be looking at houses in that area.

I could be tempted to drive to Retford though as the tickets are a fair bit cheaper...

Bawtry better than tickhill IMO but there are nice house at both places.

I don't recall either flooding but that doesn't mean it hasn't

Yep Bawtry Tickhill possibly Bessacarr closer to the station. there was an incident of flooding in Tickhill a few years ago round the mill pond area.
If you do decide to give the commute a go don't forget to add in parking at the station is £15 a day.
In all honesty I don't think it is sustainable for a long period a few months maybe but as a permanent way of life you need a better plan. Why not take a job in the north at £15k pa less you would be quids in.

That's why I suggested park and ride. £2 I think. Perfect for bawtry, bessecar, stop there at rosso but not sure how long it takes but from there to get to station.

Catching a train every day would kill my soul so never commuted that way, therefore not sure if p and r is practical. But in theorie it sounds like it if times allow.

For no other reason than wanting to help Your BH , I would suggest forgetting the Doncaster option and look at Wakefield. Stunning villages, Woolley and Bretton to name but 2 an achievable commute for your good lady and plenty of trains from Westgate to Kings X.

Doncaster to Halifax on a morning no thanks, my missus comes from Donny and when she was living with me just getting her to work and back was a nightmare! The a1 whether in a morning or on a night is a nightmare the m62 is a nightmare every morning too and I only live in Wakefield so not even that far and it would take me an hour from here to there!

I think your best hope is living in Halifax OR Wakefield

I live in outwood on the outskirts of Wakefield and it's lovely and quiet and only 5-10 mins from the city centre train to London doesn't take long either done it many times

Plus I'm not been awful to Doncaster but the crime rate over the last month or 2 has skyrocketed in balby

I know of one lad that got attacked with a machete in the local shop a few weeks back

Wakefield doesn't have any trains that get me into London with enough time to get a tube before 9.

Is it all really as bad as you say? We've got a real problem if so frown

no. wakefield is always on calendar with gang beatings and stabbings so no idea how he can single out donny. not heard anything about a machette attack in doncaster. the places you are talking about might get a bit of littering now and again

Sorry I meant in terms of travel - I realise that one area of a town won't apply to outlying villages etc!

My Mrs commutes from South Leeds to Huddersfield using the M62, she's been doing this for the last 20 yrs.
Her average journey time is 1hr 15 mins, but often takes much longer. In theory it's probably a 25-30 minute journey.
Not a nice experience, especially in winter, reckon your other half would soon get fed up with it.

Like anywhere there's good and bad areas is be looking at bessacar tickhill or bawtry

I wouldn't live near town centre like I wouldn't near Wakefield town centre but sandal Middlestown Horbury osset my outwood are nice areas there's some nice houses in the wrenthorpe and kirkhamgate area too, for the commute to Halifax it will be tedious I go there weekly for work so u need to live as close to Halifax as possible or arguments will eventually ensue

Kinda sped read through so far...
Sprotborough, High Melton, Hooton Pagnell are nice villiages.

Public transport to town arent great in the morning.

Depending on where you are, there are back roads to the M62.

Eg. Wakefield road, then head towards Barnsdale Bar, then
pontefract Road to pontefract then on to the M62 at J1.

No idea what the traffic is like, just it skips out the A1 north of Donny.
