Its been confirmed as RAF typhoons on a QRA, some people even saw them.

People complaining about their kids being woken as they have school the next day and their cats being frightened.

WTF? So much for national defence. This country is going soft.

Say you have a flight that's gone silent and they fire up the typhoons to check it out.

What would they actually do to the errant airliner? Is it better in terms of impact damage to blow the thing out of the sky or what? I can't think of any strategic targets you'd want to fly a passenger jet into round this way though.

Yes, they would do exactly that. They may, in extremis, take it out. Better 100 dead people than a city centre / hospital / football stadium.

Wouldn't shooting down a plane over a populated area, cause more deaths than if it was hi-jacked and crashed?

That's why we have human beings in the fighter jets, so they can make informed decisions.
