Hello everyone!

Just wondering if you kind people would be willing to assist with some market research please?

I am looking to set up a new business in Hull, which will specialise in performance cars. To my knowledge, Hull does not have such a business. We will be mainly internet based and will operate from an industrial unit (yet to be chosen) and will sell performance cars aged up to 10 years (unless it is a very rare car). Such things as Audi S3 and S4, BMW M3 and M5, Honda Civic Type R and Integra R, Impreza, Evo, RentaultSport, Skoda VRS and so on. I will look to stock between 5-10 cars at any given time, with a view to holding more as the business grows.

The difference being, my business will prepare the cars properly, so no scuffs on wheels, bodywork sorted, valeted and detailed - and all cars will be hand picked by myself.

So my questions is, do you all think this business would be a success, and can anyone offer advice?

When I do begin trading, I will invite members from PistonHeads to an opening party where we can all gather maybe on a sunday, chat about cars, look inside the unit and see how it is presented. It will be an opportunity to get to know a few of you and get some feedback from you guys.

Thank you all for reading....

Assuming you have a reasonable chunk of capital behind you, it doesn't sound like a bad idea OP.

Will you have experienced mechanics onsite? That would allow you to not only ensure the cars you sell are aesthetically correct but also that the cars are mechanically sound.

There might be a reason there are none in Hull itself, especially operating out of an industrial unit. Most of your clientele are going to come from the villages and surrounding towns, and a grey, nondescript unit on a slightly shabby estate might not be their number 1 choice of location smile Has the Infiniti showroom been refilled yet?

As said, if you have a good chunk of capital behind you, it seems like a reasonable plan. Make sure your USP is quality and customer service, and you would be surprised what margins you can get away with. Pick the cars, and stand behind them, and you will have generally happy customers.

Thanks Guys, Yes there will be a good amount of capital ready to be used.

There is an industrial unit I have my eye on, which is on a site which has recently been refurbished and there is a new tarmac carpark with plenty of space. The site looks very modern and fresh - not what you imagine when you think of industrial estate. Also the best part is that the estate is also home to a bodyshop, and a MOT tester and a mechanic - so no need to have one on site, I can just go to them as and when.

The idea is that we will use online advertising, so we will do proper pictures of the car as well as a walk round video - which will be done inside under bright lights to show the car off best.

Oh and the Infinity showroom is now home to Nissan...

Sounds like an ok idea, but you are going to be up against the likes of Redline and GCmotors, and Alexanders prestige (depending on your stock value) suppose it really depends on who your target market is? You say M3/M5 etc, but then skoda Vrs and Renault etc? you haven't mentioned a price point, which depending on the age of these M3/M5's many buyers would look at a main dealers and it can be the same for the Audi cars, as a main dealer can offer a used approved warranty and have been known to retail 5/6 year old cars of this calibre and still do.

Also bear in mind skoda have a main dealers as do Honda, and unless you are selling much older models they might have stock similar and offer a 12 month warranty, plus usual dealer things like HPI/Finance options. On the Subaru and Evo York has http://www.dcyeurope.com/ and thats only 40 miles from Hull. and selby has: http://www.prestigeperformancecars.co.uk/ also dont discount the occasions Philip Welch does sometimes sell cars in this catagory, although he does tend to lean the Merc/BMW/porsche/Jag way usually http://www.philipwelch.co.uk/

There was a prestige independent car seller on the Hessle road industrial estate years ago, selling all sorts from Range rovers and Ferrari/Porsche Aston etc and it closed about 5 years ago, sure it was called William Lawrence? maybe there is no prestige/sports market locally, and as i said earlier in this reply with Harrogate and redline/GC/Alexanders not far away it depends on your target market/age/price points, and what you can offer compared to that offered by redline/GC/Alexanders and the main dealers, which have all been around a long time.

I wish you every success and it wont hurt for the local Hull main dealers to have some friendly competition, so look forward to the open day, and seeing you succeed.

Good Luck and all the best.
