Skipton would be a nightmare for commuting to Pudsey, but that would be mostly due to what you'd encounter from Saltaire onwards. I worked in Bingley and had a colleague who lived in Skipton and other than the bottleneck at Keighley they had no trouble. The nightmare starts as you continue to Saltaire.

Equally, Harrogate. Woudn't go there if I had to commute to Pudsey.

slip into Greengates for a BD postcode and cheaper housing.
OP might get cheaper housing but any savings made on that front will be offset against higher car/home insurance premiums. I moved from a BD postcode to an LS postcode recently and my car insurance dropped by £300!

Well, yes. I lived in LS12 and after I'd had a car stolen from outside the house my insurance was £600. This was for a 1.4 Astra worth £300, a driver over 40, full NCB, no points, no claims other than that one theft.eek At the same time, Ilkley has a BD postcode. I bet nobody was paying £600 for an Astra there. Apart from anything else, I suspect that anyone driving anything as poverty stricken as an Astra in Ilkley would be politely asked to leave.biggrin

Ilkley doesn't have a BD postode - it has Leeds (LS29) postcode, however, Ilkley residents pay council tax to Bradford City Council - always found that odd?

Beat me to it.

And yes, Bradford City Council council tax. One of those anomalies.

Oh, I didn't realise it was LS. It does come under Bradford though as you say, which is odd. Anyway, the point is that there are BD postcodes where you'd like to live and others where you wouldn't, just like LS ones. LS8? Nice, in general. Next door in LS9? Perhaps not.

Calverley gets my vote although I'm biased;) nice walks, sainsburys on your door step and a couple of decent boozers, chap over the road from me works at Morrisons hq when it snows he takes a shortcut through the woods only 20 minutes or so to work.

I reckon you'd see a nice enough place in Calverley for £600 too. It's a nice area, esp if you have a dog or like going outdoors. I suspect the 2 bed terraces near the Thornhill pub will come in around budget, or possibly some of the 70s estate houses on the left going out towards Greengates if you value the extra bedroom and a parking space over the pretty stone frontage.

It does however depend on what's out there, available to rent, at the time.

I live 40 miles from Bradford Town Hall, in a BD Postcode. My Sister has a BD postcode and is nearer to Kendal than Bradford. It's years since I went in to the City Centre, I heard a rumour there's one of them there curry houses there now......

I think most of you guys either have broken clocks/watches or don't actually do the commutes you're speaking of! Skipton to either BD3 or Leeds in less than hour is doable before 0730 but forget it any time after that. Same applies to anywhere north Leeds from beyond the ring road. I'm near Lawnswood Rbt (ring road + A660 Otley Rd junction) and it takes an hour to get into Leeds just from there if it's after 0745 and it's only 5 miles to the centre of town. Coming from Otley/Ilkley/beyond is an extra 30-40mph crawl multiplied by distance so realistically another 30 mins+. It's exactly the same story on Kirkstall Rd and Harrogate Rd as well, and the same going back home any time after 3pm, particularly through Headingley.

I guess if you're happy "working" 10-11 hours for 8 hours pay every day then crack on but it wouldn't do for me!

My thuoghts exactly. I used to commute through Hley 20 years ago, it was bloody awful then. Spen Lane or Queenswood gave you a get out of jail, as did Meanwood Rd. I lived in Meanwood at the time, the trick was to go round the hot spots, as it is now.

It's been said, there's plenty of nice areas near Calverley etc that allow you to walk to work if you want. It's dog friendly, low crime and affordable to rent. Avoid the crappy bits of Bradford and SW Leeds, you're done. Save Skipton for weekends.

I'm from Skipton and used to commute into Leeds every day (both by train when I worked in the centre and by car when I was in Kirkstall) - it destroyed my soul, especially in winter in the snow or at peak tourist times. That said an early start on a cold morning with the roof down was often the highlight of the year and compensated for all the other crap days of being stuck.

I ended up moving to Horsforth to cut out most of the journey and now live at the other side of Leeds but work from home. On the occasions I do need to get into the city (or Bradford) it can still take me well over an hour if someone has decided to park funny or have an accident, the whole area seems prone to complete gridlock.

Birkenshaw and Driglington might be worth a look if you aren't scared of buses, Morley is also a bit of a halfway house between Leeds & Bradford with fairly decent transport links.

I simply wouldn't consider commuting by car into Leeds if I worked anything close to resembling standard hours. I live in the city centre and will walk past stationary traffic every morning and every afternoon that seems to start earlier and earlier these days (3pm its already gridlocked).

If I ever move from town I'd be aiming for somewhere with a decent rail link like Wharfe valley.

As I said earlier on this thread, in budget I would be looking at somewhere close to New Pudsey so you can park for nothing (decent size car park too), hop on the train for less than £3 and in central Leeds within 10 minutes. Losing a few hours a day to sit in a glacial moving car park would frustrate the hell out of me.

My place is 15 mins walk to New Pudsey, and I could walk to morri's HO. In the evenings an off-peak day return to town is £3.60, last train back, the p*ssheads' express, leaves town at 11.08.

Stanningley and farsley have rental stuff that would suit.

Your issue with Calverley, Rodley and Farsley is availability of property. Anything nice will go very quickly. We were in Calverley for 4 years and just moved up to Rawdon. Would recommend this end of Leeds, but be prepared to act when you see something you really like (as in, be in the first couple of people to view and romp to the agents with the deposit if you like it).

If you want 3 or 4 beds your budget is probably at the low end and the competition will be at its fiercest.

Morley and other areas near the M62 have decent housing stock at better pricing than North Leeds and the commute from there up the ring road to Thornbury isn't stupid (you're generally commuting in the opposite direction to all the other traffic.

On the Bradford side, I wouldn't live in Greengates but a bit further up at Idle is OK with plenty of amenities and a decent commute (10-15) mins to Morrisons.

Apperley Bridge has become more expensive due to the new train station, though you have the canal for walks and it's surprisingly scenic down there.

Generally much of Bradford is a sthole but there are pockets dotted around that are nice.

Don't bother with Skipton, as the commute will see you suicidal in a couple of weeks.

As others have said Calverley and Rodley are spot on but they go quick. One to consider a mile or so up the road is Thackley. Very pleasant and quiet with woods round the back for dog walking.
