My girlfriend is at Uni in Leeds and I am thinking about driving up there (as opposed to train). Does anyone know an interesting route I can take up? It doesnt have to be fast, I just dont want something boring (like the A1). Would be nice if wasnt a super long way around though. Doesnt have to be nice to look at, just with some nice sweeping and twisting roads..

Cheers, Greg.

PS. I also might be going to Harewood Hill next weekend for the first time!

Well the trains bloody pricey and infrequent so good move. Not easy to find a good route which avoids the A1 M1 M62 A64 though. Try using a routefinder program set to 'shortest' with the minor roads enabled.

Try the A638 road to Wakefield, excellent road with few if any t/lights once your out of Doncaster, when you get to wakefield turn right for Leeds, or you can go right from any point after Ackworth & just work your way there.

Hi guys.

Thanks for the tips. I think I might have done the A638 about 5 years ago in my Mum's old Metro! I do seem to remember it being an ok road though. I dont travel up north much so I dont really know any of the nice routes.

Cheers again, Greg.

bit of a long way round but head out of doncaster towards pontefract, have a blast round some of the back roads and lanes around the Norton/Womersley/Walden Stubbs/Kirk smeaton area some very good roads out that way, just watch for the horses

Hmmm, that road is a bit naff these days... especially during the day. Excessive reductions in speed limits, engineered to make you have to drive slower than needed in areas, and hawk like TrafPol speed monitoring.

Several work colleagues use that route every day and find it more of a chore than a thrill because of the above!

I'm sure you'd be best sticking east of the A1 up past Eggborough, Sherburn and around Tadcaster, and into Leeds on the A64...

Go up to ferrybridge, then take the Sherburn road that runs paralell with the A1, then at the roundabout near Monk fryston, turn left and scoot across country on the B roads to Selby and Leeds.
