While some people leave their doors unlocked, mine were stolen by breaking through the garage door, and the most recent was by fishing keys through the letterbox.

My car keys were sitting in the kitchen - they had to go through the garage, utility room and porch before getting in there.

I think I should feel reasonably safe in my house, while myself and family are in it, without having to be constantly locked up and alarmed.

Unfortunately there is a severe lack of consequences for these scrots - they are being labeled as 'joy riders' when they are in fact breaking and entering, stealing goods from within the house, then making off with cars as well.

Yet if I had found one in the house and lamped him, I would of been done with assault. They would also know where we live and could come back anytime.

I reitterate my feelings from earlier on as well, re the police. As individuals, they are generally well mannered and hard working. UNfortunately they are also understaffed, under resourced and have their hands literally tied behind their backs by rule makers, who seem to value the 'rights' of these individuals over the 'good' of the remaining public.

Rather than moan to/about the police, we'd be better served harrassing our politicians to allow the police to do their jobs to their best ability. This would also include harsher prison conditions and massively restricted personal rights while convicted.

I swear the older I get the less liberal I get.

oh for sure, if the 'lamping' had occurred, it would of been a Southpark thing "its coming right for us!"

hypothetically, what would happen would be you would 'defend' yourself with the cricket bat, then put the cleaver in their hands.....

Nice idea in principal, but all you would be doing is setting yourself up as a target for them, I think.

Oh and kiltie, shades of gray, but not 50.

Eric,

traditionally, the blunt object sharp object game works like I previously described - the blunt object is used to defend yourself, until the intruder is incapicitated.

Then, if need be, the sharp object is placed in the hands of the intruder, to suggest that there was sufficient justification for you as the homeowner to defend ourself from the sharp object wielding thief.

Personally, if you catch someone breaking into your home they should be fair game.

Eric,

thanks for taking the time to respond in a sensible manner.

Mostly I think that (certainly from my side) talk of defending ourselves is basically willy waggling as I too would probably, in the real world, just give them the keys if we got to the situation that they are standing over (the family) beds.

However this doesnt stop me wishing/thinking tough thoughts as I am lying in bed unable to sleep, after recently being burgled, working through the anger.

I wouldnt advise following - they have been seen to be armed with a machette type weapon in one case, just call the cops.

They have also been known known to try and flag down cars and in my case had my hand axe from inside my garage out beside them when they took my car.

As much as I think the police could have their priorities in better order, the problem isn't the police as such - it's the constraints that they have to work within and the CPS / Scottish legal system that is the problem.

The net result is, as I said earlier, simply that there is no deterrent whatsoever. These parasites have nothing to lose, so they don't give a sh!t.

completely correct - in all my dealings, the police have been as helpful as they can be, and to a person, would want this to stop asap. Unfortunately they are constrained by rules set by others.

if you want a change in this behavior, its your politicians and judges that can do that.
