Guys

I think my practical test is what the police tend to enforce! If you can't see the driver clearly through the side windows or windscreen then it is too dark! That is the way I have heard these cases argued by the cops in the past. Seems a simple practical test and one I agree with. An extension of the old adage of 'see and be seen' for driving!

I know you're mistaken and they, in fact, use a light meter like TintMan smile

Not aware of cops carrying light meters in their cars! Quite a few cops on here and you may be one. Perhaps they can comment?

I am aware of the C&U regs and RTA issues, it is the practicality of when they stop people and warn/charge.

Not suggesting that they are in every car, but they are available to traffic officers and are frequently used when reporting/ticketing people for tinting offences:-

Some of them do. I bought a Golf that already had it's windows Tinted, I got stopped in Glasgow, windows tested and fined.

Can't see how a lack of visual of the driver is any gauge of too darker tints. It can all vary depending on light conditions at the time don't you think?

On my car that has apparently legal tints it does look very dark on overcast days but looks acceptable on bright sunny days. Can't see how the police can be judge and jury as it's very subjective to other variables at the time.

My company tint windows. Anything stuck on from the B post forward is illegal. As all ready been said 70% is the legal limit which is the 'factory' tint in the glass. The MOT doesn't have a check for it so it will pass and the police and VOSA do have light meters to check and prosecute you. Depending on the tint you can get from a fine to a prohibition notice until its removed. If you want to block the heat and UV you can get a clear film to do this.

Anyone can do anything with light to illuminate a space. My comments are on the basis that most people don't own light meters. The OP is 18 and may benefit from a simple test which had a double advantage! In any event the police have to take a subjective view before challenging people in much the same way as stopping someone for possible drink driving.

I have friends who own MOT stations and the weekly see cars coming in, which have been 'modified' by generally younger drivers, which render them either unsafe or not really drivable, EG Suspension lowered so much that there is nearly no travel etc. It all may look good to them and their mates, and they may have been told it's 'legal' but............

Perhaps some of the traffic cops on here may want to break cover for a change and contribute! I promise to buy them a cake when we next meet! I know its bribery, but hey your all athletes!

I got a midnight black tint to the rear of the b-pillar, perfectly legal, similar to the tint that came standard with my parents car, looks a lot better and also makes it a lot easier on the eyes when look in the rear-view mirror
