Aberdeen - Nurburgring 2012
Discussion
Morning all, thought I'd post this up on here if anyone is interested..
We've wanted to do another trip to follow on from my previous trip over in 2008. We have been saying we would go back every year but never got round to it, until this year finally.
2008 there was only the two of us, this time we had 12! (Old blog here if anyone is interested - http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
Anyways, onto some pics
Meeting point was Queensferry early on and then convoy down to Newcastle for the ferry over to Amsterdam.. All pretty uneventful..
Arrived at the port
On the Ferry
£310 each for this!!!
Amsterdam refuel
The journey down to the Hotel was good, we broke off into two groups as its quite difficult having 7 cars all trying to follow. The scenery once you pull off the motorway is beautiful
Arrived at the Hotel. Pretty basic hotel and the breakfast isnt up to much, but its clean, cheap and in the perfect location
Few beers at night time and a steak on a stone.. I thought this was a bit of a novelty but really it was a pain in the ass. Wouldn't go again
Some track pics of us all in action. My pictures didnt come out very well as I had it on Shutter Preference but the ISO was set far too high.. Nevermind! The track itself was very quiet, which we didnt expect. Almost no queues the whole weekend.
We definately got lucky with the weather, it was roasting all weekend, until the day we left and it absolutely lashed it down.. Made an interesting night on the ferry home! TERRIBLE!
All in all a superb trip, a good bit more expensive than the last one due to fuel and ferry prices, but worth it!

Complaints aside sounds like you had a good trip,
Good pics of the evora!
Ferry prices are much cheaper if you book in advance, also surprised you didn't like Pistonclause if that's where you got the steaks, was it quiet? Usually there's a good atmosphere and the steaks are tasty.
You sure? We booked a good while in advance.. The return leg was so bad last time I think I'd consider the tunnel when we next go! Good pics of the evora!

No no, restaurant was superb, just thought the self cooking steak was a bit gimmicky! I'll order mine pre cooked next time..
Yeah ive been 1/2 times a year for the past 4 years, always paid £140-250 each. There might have been some event on that week which pushed the price up.
Ah ok, the pre-cooked steaks are good but I enjoy doing it myself.
Planning to head over again in April/May, can't wait for winter to come and go!

I can honestly say it's the best holiday I've ever had.
I did it last year with the boys, but we drove all the way down and all the way back up. Left German at 9am and got back to Edinburgh, 1am next again morning.
16 hours of solid driving and seven cans of redbull later and I was finally in my bed!
Super trip and looking to do it again in the near future.

Possibly yeah. Although that price included food on the ferry.. Ah ok, the pre-cooked steaks are good but I enjoy doing it myself.

Absolutely superb trip. Maybe a bit rushed as we only had an evening and one full day at the Ring. I think next time I'd like to head for some of the famous passes aswell
That looks great fun!
Me and a mate were considering this next year and maybe do spa at the same time. Cost of the ferry is scary (especially with westfields on our trailers!)
We've decided against it I think due to the 'insurance issue' at the ring but were looking into actual track days there as well to avoid that.
Think we're just doing a couple of English tracks instead now (cadwell and another depending on dates) as our wives and kids are coming to so a bit less hassles/driving.
How do you guys deal with the insurance 'issue' I'd you don't mind me asking?
Cheers,
Dave

I don't drive it like a track but rather in such a way that I'm mocked by others for being more spirited on a B road at home than I am on the ring. Still open to being collected in another driver/riders mistake but its the chance you take on tourist days.As for the crossings, I had a rough one from Newcastle and another from Hull, vowed to always use the tunnel thereafter.
Sure it adds a couple of hundred miles each way but its cheaper, crossing times/options are more flexible and ultimately it is a driving trip so another couple of hours at the wheel aren't much really.

Unfortunately I will now only ever do closed trackdays in my own car.Rentals can give you the 3rd party liability cover. As a first timer my recommendation would be to drive over for the crack but rent a Swift etc for lapping.
