To be fair the X1/9 is a bit of a Marmite car. Some people get it some don't. The fact the car was designed in 1968 and still handles better than most modern sports cars annoys the heck out of people on track.

Yes they have rust issues. There aren't many cars from that era that don't.
Yes parts availability can be troublesome, welcome to the world of rare (only eighty or so left in the UK) classic cars.
Yes some have been owned by pillocks. Now they have stopped depreciating for every decent well looked after example you're find at least three that have been dragged out of storage, a council estate garden or parts donor and bodged back on the road with an M.O.T that suggests the testers guide dog was sick that day.

Part of the fun of classic car ownership is finding out about the vehicles past. Either going through the history file, getting your hands dirty or in my case both.

I certainly wouldn't expect someone to have paid just over £600 for a head gasket change (obviously the owner cared enough for the car to spend more than it was worth to keep it on the road) by a reputable garage/dealer in 1999 for the thermostat housing to be stuck on with windscreen glue (Tiger Seal) for the sake of a £2.55 gasket.

The housing bolts sheared and now I have to replace the head as the studs will not come out without taking the head off. A replacement head means I can polish the ports while I'm at it safe in the knowledge that heat from trying to extract studs hasn't caused any damage.

Some of the receipts for the car are...

£826 for a clutch, gearbox oil and CV's (CV boots held on with cable ties).
£283 for a "new" petrol tank when the existing tank has had a patch welded, fiberglass and red underseal stuff that's still wet.
£176 for an M.O.T where the only work carried out was two light bulbs changed.

As I said if this in an example of Culter Car Centre's work; I'm relieved they are out of business.

I like Focus's, they don't catch fire as much as Astra's.
