77MPH Speeding ticket M74

Was under impression APCO guidelines were 79mph & above was where you started gatting points or worse
Brunstrom persuaded chief constables to ignore the guidelines, should they so wish. Some South Yorkshire cameras trigger at 32mph.
He's now sailing round the world with his wife and an unfortunate pair of friends.
Ouch, cameras are a right pain. I don't think they have a "discretionary" margin any more. I was just done for the first time ever for 80 in a 70 (camera "partnership" van on the A9 near Bridge Of Allan) and a traffic friend of mine reckoned it was a bit harsh and he'd not have pulled me for that.
I didn't fight it or anything, was a fair cop and I'm sure I've been speeding many times and not been caught, you live n learn.

Could be, "Would you like to voluntarily accept a Statutory Notice for £100 (£60?) and 3 points, Sir?" for a speed which is inside the guidelines.
Or, if you've got the Kahunas, "I'll see you in Court, Officer We'll see if your Chief wants to waste yours and the courts time for a speed which is covered by the inherent inaccuracy of car speedometers."
Case to be thrown out of Court by a Sheriff who understands these things

We got done by the same camera my letter gave the prosecution threshold as 79mph.I didn't fight it or anything, was a fair cop and I'm sure I've been speeding many times and not been caught, you live n learn.
Yes those "guidelines" maybe are correct for your speedo reading...
But for him to get caught going a calibrated 77mph, he must have been going at least 80mph on his speedo...
Therefore it is outwith the "guidelines".
Personally I stick to 76mph into my cruise control and I have no issues. But then each car will be different... And that's when I'm only cruising... :P

If he was stopped it means by a cop car. The vans on the 74 don't work at 77. The limit is 70 so 71 is an offence. A bit rough but if you overtake a cop car............. I did once some years ago. Was unmarked and thinking of a meeting i was going too so didn't spot it. Idiot I know. Anyway the cops thought it was hilarious and spent more time showing me their new skoda superb V6 and how happy they were with it etc. My reply to caution and charge was I must be F****** stupid overtaking an unmarked cop car! They though it was the funniest thing they had heard all year!
In fairness to Lanark Sheriff court and all courts on major routes they hear so many of these cases they do get a bit blasé! The last poster may not want to appear before Sheriff Stewart with that comment! lol One of the previous resident sheriffs up there was an ex rally driver. You didn't need to work too hard on speeding cases to keep a clients licence!

No Your speedometer could both underread or overread by 10% so you could be sitting with 70mph on Speedo and be doing anything between 63 & 77mphBut for him to get caught going a calibrated 77mph, he must have been going at least 80mph on his speedo...

Yeah I notice on the Mustang that my speedo is out, and I think that definitely contributed to the 80 in a 70 ticket because I remember looking at my speedo when I saw the van and thinking, "ach, we're alright!"
I think the bigger wheels have had an effect that is amplified the faster you go too. Not sure what th outside diameter including rubber is on standard 17s but I think my 20s are exceeding it. I've noticed those signs you sometimes get going into villages round here that tell you your speed that in the Honda I'm normally on the money or 1mph under, in the Mustang I'm consistently at least 2mph over for a 30 sign even though the speedo reads 29.
Course, a contributory factor I also have to contend with is the benchmark of, quality American engineering...
