Yes, 6am Sunday morning, literally heading for the hills...

Agree she might get away with it, depending on speedo accuracy. Will of course pass on her helpful research results!

I left the roundabout at Connon Bridge around 3pm on Friday and arrived at Inveralmond roundabout 2 hours 10 minutes later, I think that's an average of about 56mph? I think that is about a good a pace as used to be possible pre-ASC at that time of day without being very committed to making progress and breaking laws.

I kept GPS average of 59-60 through a few sections, worst was 47 around Aviemore. 50-54 ish was common. That was with some S/C overtaking on my behalf (less than my usual TBH), and not going bonkers on the D/C sections either.

I can easily see it all turning to st with higher traffic flow, but for now I've had an overall positive experience with the ASC's, and I didn't think I;d be saying that.

Tailgating didn't seem so bad either, and on the SC sections that made overtaking easier. Everybody seemed more relaxed. I did spot a few vans blissfully unaware of their 50 mph limit nono some other vans were crawling along 45, but the lorries for the most were sitting at GPS 50 or near enough thumbup

Still bloody terrified of what'll happen come summer traffic and idiot tourists!

On the A9 today for the first time since the cameras went live. Just from Perth to House of Bruar.

I think the slow bits were quicker, and the quick bits were slower than previously.

Single carriageway with HGV's going at 50 seemed to keep the flow going ok with most people happy to cruise at 50 in reasonably well spaced shortish queues. None of the usual slowing down to less than 40 then speeding up to 50+ then slowing again, just a much more constant speed.
Dual carriageways, most traffic seemed to stay at 60 at the most. Going at 70 nobody overtook me and I overtook everyone ahead of me.

Of course a one off short trip in November isn't going to be reflective of a bank holiday weekend in August, so we'll wait and see.

Very sad news.

Indeed - the very point of the thread is that the A9's problem is not speed.

I drove Edinburgh to Aviemore at the weekend. The traffic was well spaced but it was a constant queue at 50mph the entire way. Most people seem to think the dual carriageway sections are 60 too!

I travelled on the Perth to Dunblane section on Tuesday and was surprised at just how many scameras there were. Very few cars were travelling at 70 most were doing 60-65 including when they were overtaking HGV's. Having travelled this road for 50 years I really question why they saw the need to police it so heavily when the only real problems are at the numerous junctions. Once again I had to brake heavily when a van pulled out in front of me at Auchterarder.
I just hope the cameras are set to Lord Advocates guidelines, and not set at a few mph above 70.

I travelled up from Perth to Dalwhinnie early this morning. Traffic behaviour much as described above.

Not too bad while the road was busy but when it quietened down (surprisingly much) after Pitlochry as it occasionally does, I found myself happily plodding along below what I hoped the "thresholds" might be.

Until I came up behind slightly slower traffic. Quick, safe, easy overtake opportunities straightaway ..... followed by me having to slow down well below the limit for a period to ensure my average was ok. Bonkers.

It's going to reduce the incentive to travel late evening or early morning to get the benefit of light traffic.

Doh! I meant the north end of the Cromarty Bridge.

I've done a few more runs on the a9 since and my experience has been about the same. My old man who drives a van up and down there regularly is hating it though!

FWIW for those overtaking above 60 and worried about average speed, north of Perth the spacings seem to be mostly 3.5 miles, I think the shortest is about 3, the longest one is maybe 4.5 - that may have been south of perth though? Don't quote me on that though. But that does mean if you are 1 mile into an ASC zone and your average is above 60 you can cruise just below 60 and let your average drop slowly, but if you are near to 3 miles since the last camera I'd consider getting that average down sharpish!

I think much of the slowing down will be done by the self employed parcel delivery drivers. They'd be doing top end car speeds previously, but now have to sit at 50 on the SCs I think..?

Anyone else think that SPECS create inherently dangerous conditions by virtue of bunching up the traffic?

Drove to Aberdeen and back last weekend, and the traffic spacing on the SPECS sections was quite bad, the difference after Stirling was very marked.

It has been over two weeks now since I came down from Inverness as quickly as I dared given the new system's operation. So far nothing bad in the post.

Bear in mind not all the cameras are operational. Were you consistently 'pressing on'?

Drove from Dundee to Inverness and back on Sunday.....morning run fine due to very little traffic! Return leg was worst ever.....soooooo frustrating, almost all cars sitting at 50 then SLOWING down for the cameras!! To make it worse...people then pull into the overtaking lane at the dual carriageways and sit at 65mph....overtaking noone!!

Came the closest i have ever been (in 20 years) to an accident as well......its a nightmare!

So far, all I can see is that SPECS have increased driver stress, reduced traffic spacing and increased journey times.

How long before front number plates become very dirty or prone to falling off?
