20 MPH Speed Limits in Edinburgh - Help needed
Discussion
Great idea in theory (ie on side roads) but totally stupid to introduce on main roads and arteries into the city. They should be focusing on improving traffic flow rather than pissing money up the wall as they usually do. The decision will already be made though, much as it was on the trams and appears to be on their plans to build over the greenbelt on the west side of the city near Barnton. Utterly disgraceful councilor behaviour but then what do you expect from them? Hanging onto the coat tails of power and trying to act the big king dick for a day is never going to result in sensible decisions.

I also noticed that Edinburgh set to be first Scottish city to permit motorbikes in bus lanes although I'm unsure exactly why they're making this change.
Because they can't make identify them with the cameras, so can't make any money out of them anyway?simoid said:

p.s. filled out feedback and passed it round to some people who did the same.

I didn't hold back on that "Extra comments" box... This is anothjer stupid idea designed to batter our wallets etc. They want to ty and turn Edinbrugh into some sort of Cosmopolitan city, just look at George street during the festival. Alfresco dining in a glass box in the middle of a road... becuase it's just like Milan
I bet a lot of people don't know that the license for the closure of George Street is actually 18 months, not just the month of the festival like last year. This means the Alfresco dining will be around until at least next Christmas. The idea is to make it permanent, according to a friend that owns a hotel on the street. The New Town's grid layout allows the wind to funnel through the streets - you can get knocked back walking around corners at times by the strength of it. George Street is conveniently the highest point of the New Town (ignoring Calton Hill), and guess what - it's windy and fking cold for at least half the year.....
Alfresco dining? Alfreezer dining instead. Idiots.

I thought it was enough to identify the vehicle in the country? And it then becomes responsibility of the owner to state who was driving the motor at the time.

The cameras are front facing so it would be a fair amount of detective work to identify an anonymous bike :-)Am only aware of Germany where they need to id the driver. That's the reason the speed traps take pictures of the front so they can see the face of the driver on it.

20mph in Edinburgh?
Princes Street last night. No movement at all on the inside lane heading east for 10 minutes. Why? Bus was in front of a tram on the outside lane. Traffic lights stay at red to give tram priority, but tram couldn't move because of the bus. But the lights stay red to give the tram priority. Inside lane can't move because the tail end of the bus in the tram lane is sticking into the left hand lane.
Eventually, the bus in front of the tram went through the red light. The tram moved and Princes Street started moving again.
The tram had about 6 people on it. The 12 buses that I could see were pretty full. At least 5 buses switched their engines off to reduce the emissions.
Of course, the trams don't serve the east or south side where many of the people live.............

Poorly planned nonsense - no surprise coming from CEC muppets.
Reasonable to have lower limits around schools (at certain times), busy shopping centres (in the day), busy nightlife centres (in the evenings), but blanket limits across the city is utterly barmy - variable usage works with bus lanes, so no reason why it could not be applied to other roads.
I live reasonably close to the centre and walk or bus my way around - never take the car due to congestion and parking difficulties - but it will get to the point where it is so much trouble to occasionally cross town or get out of Edinburgh that I may as well not bother to have a car - perhaps that's the plan........

The consultation on this closes on 17 October. I would encourage any PH'ers who haven't yet done so to respond before then.

Just completed. Jesus I had no idea it was going to be such a blanket limit across the city. I can understand reducing the limit near schools, but 20mph across the whole city is just daft when the pavements aren't that busy and traffic is light.
Seems just like when they wanted to bring a congestion charge in. Plus, this 20mph limit will only make buses slower as well.

Completed it too as a regular visitor to Edinburgh. Why don't they just say they hate cars at any speed!
In the next decade it will be reduced to 10mph as the incompetent sanctimonious drivers will prevail and will be unsafe at any speed! Perhaps we should give them all Edsels to drive!
Most of these councillors should be facing a criminal investigation for the trams farce. And they want to vote on the next way to ruin Edinburgh! grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

The bus issue had not occurred to me - given the pressure the drivers are under to keep timetables, an even narrower band to work within can't be helpful.
I assume all bus timetables would have to be recalculated - and the tram.
Only plus side is that I will be travelling slower when I encounter the wrecked, potholed roads across the city ..............

A lot of Aberdeen city centre is 20 mph, can't say I've ever noticed many people actually obeying it, especially bus drivers.
Where I live is a rat run and has been designated a 20 mph zone too, again, hardly anyone travels at 20 mph.
Yep that is the case in the areas of Edinburgh already 20mph too I'd say. So even more pointless, unless they are lining it up to set up speed cameras everywhere...Where I live is a rat run and has been designated a 20 mph zone too, again, hardly anyone travels at 20 mph.
This is progressing - looks like the plans for blanket 20 mph limit will go before members of Edinburgh city council's transport and environment committee for approval next week.

Oh, and free Sunday parking is being ditched. They also want to extend evening parking restrictions and extend permit holders parking rights in pay-and-display parking spaces.
Great. Just great.
