I'm sure when this crappy idea was first brought up the Police have said that they won't monitor the 20mph zones unless there is a complaint or something.

Although recently I saw an article where they said they would monitor the zones...

A thread in NP@E suggesting that a blanket 20mph limit has been suggested in London too...

Given the extent of the 20mph coverage I can't see how the polis would have the resources to enforce this other than in a few hotspots.

OTOH the fact that it is being introduced in stages means they have a smaller areas to focus initial targeted enforcement - I suppose this helps change driver behaviour gradually.

Until they are all in and then it becomes a free for all (by which time the Police will have even less resources to do anything about it)

Driving home coming through Lasswade, I noticed a sign saying as of 30/3/15 the speed limit would be reduced to 20mph, no doubt it'll carry on in to Bonnyrigg frown. I can't see any obvious reason for the change.
Christ, I must be blind because I drive that road morning & night !

So the trial was a "success", which is surprising given that there are no metrics to measure it, but who needs evidence eh. Come summer the permanent change to 20mph happens. What a progressive city i live in mad

Yep you've got to love the "democracy" of Edinburgh City Council. Something like 63 objections out of 80 odd replies, but that means folk are in favour.

Strange. They only said on the news that "only 63 objections were raised." There's thousands on a facebook campaign I'm sure (obviously not an acceptable forum for the council to take opinions but still...)

"But despite this early backlash, the council’s citywide consultation on the issue, made public yesterday, received only 86 responses. Of these, 54 were objections – with only 27 indicating they supported the plans."

You couldn't make it up.

I do like the Council's view that excess speed does not cause/exacerbate accidents if it is on a main bus route.

I rarely drive around the town, just in and out, and the main in and out routes won't change for me so it will make little difference.

There is no Polis resource to monitor the minor roads, so it seems this will effectively end up being a voluntary limit until someone works out a way for a massive fleet of camera vans to provide a significant net financial return.

I've been breaking the 30's for years without incident. Some of them are ridiculously low already, so it looks like i'll be at least doubling some of the 20s. I usually go down queen st at 40 and will continue to. I might see if I can get the high score and a story in the EEN.

The FAQ seems to suggest that the majority of traffic is doing around 20mph already, and as such the limit will be "self enforcing". But if that's the case, how can they claim the city centre will be better for pedestrians, cyclists, etc., when apparently the speed of vehicles will be about the same as they already are?

If you tried bringing that up with a councillor in person their heads would explode.

I've not heard anything about this proposal for some time - what's the latest?
