Currently investigating how much of a clusterfk driving this route will be. Looking to travel from East Kilbride to Ingliston park and ride, then take a tram a few stops.

Anyone got experience of this route and travel times?

Area around the airport/Ingliston can be a bit hectic depending on time.

And the trams are ok... until they crash lol!

Think EK is different from Glasgow to Edinburgh with the big difference being that if you go the M8 then you are talking about negotiating Raith Interchange and Shawhead.

Unless is the A71 an option?

I used to almost that exact commute for three years - High Blantyre to Hermiston.

The M8 backs up every day leading up to the Edinburgh bypass. Either get up earlier or come off at the M9 junction and double back (turn lard left) at the Newbridge Roundabout. This takes you through the industrial estate at Newbridge, back under the M8 and you can come in from the A71.

But is there parking at Hermiston Gate, perhaps (it's been years...), could you get the train/tram in from Edinburgh Park?

Although they will be upgrading the Raith Interchange "soon" (they were saying that when I lived there years back. Had compulsory purchase orders in and everything...). I never found that junction too bad heading East. Coming back at night it was a ball-ache.

There is the park and ride at Riccarton / Heriot Watt that has good bus links with city centre. No time limits.

I normally go the m90 but I live in the north east of Glasgow. Hermiston gait is a bit hectic and m8 can be busy from half 8 til half 9 then 4 til 6/7.

Been doing this on and off for years from Motherwell - Edinburgh city center/Corstorphine/Gyle depending on company. Since the new train line from Airdrie started I use that. Park at train station and trains every 15-20 minutes. I usually detest public transport but as travelling in and out of Edinburgh is such a ball ache its the one exception I make.

I'd try and meet he train line early and leave the car.

The traffic used to be slow(50-60mph) after 7am right along the M8 and then traffic really poor past Livingston.

Rather than using the car for as far as you can, try to meet the train line as soon as possible.

Places like Bathgate have large car parks now.

Second.

The missus did the Edinburgh <-> Glasgow commute for a while and soon opted for the train. Later she actually took the 900 Bus as it was more convenient to get on and cheaper. It does stop half way in Harthill.

If you go a bit further down, you can park for free all the way down Bankhead Drive (where the Aston and Lotus dealer shop is), and there is a Tram station just next to it. We now do that if we want to go to town on a Saturday afternoon. (So no idea how easy it is to get a spot there during the week.) However, Calendar Road and the Hermiston roundabout over the A720 tend to be often congested in the morning. So jumping on public transport on your side of the bypass is certainly preferable.

Coming out off Ingliston park and ride in the evening, 17:15-18:00, to head west to Newbridge you are pretty much guaranteed to meet a queue of traffic on the A8 Glasgow Road. Except during summer holidays.

Whilst I was training through in Bellshill I was commuting from West Fife over the Forth Bridge, through Newbridge and onto the M8, staying on until the junction at Motherwell. Even at peak times the route was quiet (i.e. around back of 8 in the morning) but what I did always notice that the Edinburgh bound traffic heading the other way on the M8 was always really busy, but still moving at an okay pace.

You're gonna have a bit of a problem though when it comes to Ingliston. That junction at Newbridge by the 'luxury car village' and over Ratho Station/the airport and Gogar is a total nightmare at rush hour. Luckily I used to avoid it at Newbridge as I was heading for the M8 (from the M9 direction) but the turn off onto there was always tailed way back to the M9 Spur junction. Just make sure you leave yourself plenty of time because the chances of you getting held up are pretty high, especially at peak time.
