Hi all,

I'm an 18yo driver just almost finished my first year holding a full license and i'm looking at switching my wee renault clio for something a bit quicker. I could go down the route of getting a hyundai coupe or down the route of a classic car. I've had a look and so far a Triumph TR7 has intrigued me; however, what other classics should i consider? Mainly looking at sports cars since i've not got any baggage etc, might as well have the fun while i can! But any suggestions for other cheap to buy & insure classics? All suggestions would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Greg

Most insurance companies will not insure anyone under 25 on a classic policy as far as I am aware .
The MX5 is a nice car but still is only a 16 year old car and do not think qualifies as a classic yet.

I'm 23 and i've had:

Rover mini
Alfa gtv
tvr chimaera
tvr Tasmin
p38 range rover

Hopefully that'll give you some ideas. You don't have to get bored of a car after 6 months like me!

hyundai coupe is nowhere near a sports car. Mx-5 1.8 is decently quick if you're used to stboxes. Older = better, watch out for rust though.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, a MK1 MX5 1.6 I've been quoted £3200 for insurance. I've got a budget of around £3000 to buy the car and I'm looking for quotes in the region of £1000 a year. a Hyundai Coupe 2.0 Ltr is £1300 a year to insure for me which is pretty decent, however the TR7 was £1100.

Already tried. 2 Ltr Turbo Engine means the premium is rather high frown

Is there an explanation for the wacky variety of quotes I'm receiving?
My dream is to own a subaru impreza so with a bit of tongue n cheek i got a quote for a 2001 Impreza 2.0 Sport 4WD for £1763 a year. - Cheaper than my current premium for the clio!

Fair enough it isnt the top spec impreza with the turbo but the way i see it is that the turbo is one less expensive part to fail.

Think i'll need to speak it over with my car dealer.

Pick something that's not common for a young lad to drive. Mk1 mx5 is good but is common as muck for the younger generation to buy and write off. I'd go for a midget or triumph.

Happy hunting. thumbup

Cheers but that's what i'm asking, what would be something uncommon for my age?

Strange on the insurance with the MX5, was it an import or uk one that you quoted on? My MK2 1.6 cost me about £1100 to insure when I was 18 with no NCB and 1 non fault accident on my record!

I was let to believe that kit cars are often cheaper to ensure than the cars they are based on. So that might be one angle to explore.

Just the UK model, not sure. To be honest ideally i'm looking for a hardtop or a convertible with a hard top, i do mostly motorway driving to get to work so it must a rhd as well

well you can probably guess what I'm going to say and not your usual "young man's" transport...

midget if you like small or Mini but you'll struggle to get a good one for 3k
or

MGB

Not super quick but provides hours of fun, can be hard or soft top and with overdrive it will handle the motorway commute with ease. 3k will get something running but needing work and if you DIY all parts are available..

Body condition is all important and if you look after it and don't prang it it will increase in value (sort of!)

I'm busy restoring one and, if you are near Edinburgh, can show you all the points to look out for...

PS if you don't weld you'll soon learn laughlaugh

Triumph Spitfire, still around in ok nick for £1500-2000

Much bigger engine bay to learn your way about the mechanicals, and parts are reasonable.

I learnt to drive in one 10 years ago, still got the same car, all be it with a full rebuild and it no longer being a daily driver.
