How depressing. I realise they are there to protect roadside workers but what was wrong with people just using common sense and slowing down when they actually see construction workers by the roadside?
Because most drivers don't use common sense at any point. The roadworks have reduced the run-off areas, have changed the northbound on slip before J1 so it has poor sightlines and merges with traffic leaving at J1, and the 50mph zone extends through these hazards. Most drivers ignore them and do 70+mph, just as they used to whilst sitting in their BMW/Audi cocoon.

Would you rather spend a few more seconds obeying the lower limit, or face several hours of delay when Police Scotland close the road to investigate the killing of a roadworker who stumbles?

For what it's worth, I agree with you entirely.

The former, of those two choices, but I'd prefer a more proportionate response than the installation of average speed cameras which will be operational 24 hours a day over the entire stretch of road regardless of whether there is actually a risk to a construction worker at any given point or time. They could have a copper with a raygun follow the constructions workers around on site for a fraction of the cost.

My wee sister got done recently by two coppers armed with an XC70 and a speed gun and hiding in the layby just north of the bridge. They took off after her in full blues mode so she decided, being of sound Fife stock, to simply keep going until "she felt safe" which was about 5 miles up the road and halfway through Rosyth, Seemingly PC Plod was nane too impressed and rewarded her with some points and relieved her of £100.00.

Expect that stretch to be policed more heavily now that major roadworks are imminent.

Expect sister to continue to drive like she stole it.

Wimen... they'll never learn!

That seems incredibly sneaky to me on the basis that on a calm day virtually no one sticks to 50mph (the bridge's limit).

Thanks for finally confirming what I suspected off you.

Why do you think the structure, suspended by wire ropes, over the Forth has a speed limit?

Go on, think about it.

Police Scotland is no longer a criminal investigation organisation, it is now a revenue generating service targetting easy victims i.e. motorists. The people pushing all this anti speed campaigns will point to a reduction in accidents and road deaths since the introduction of speed cameras, totally ignoring the vast advances in technology in cars in the same period making them much safer and more forgiving when the drivers talent runs out, ABS,TC, DSC, automatic wipers, automatic lighting, greatly improved braking materials, improved tyre tread patterns for dispersing water, etc etc etc.

I think you are [sadly]correct given the lengths the police go to hide their activities on the A90.

I'm old enough to remember when the bridge limit was 70. I guess as vehicles have improved, the rusty cables have got worse.

I moved to Aberdeenin 1983 and it was 70 then as I used to go up and down every other week.

Same as the Kingsway - that used to be 70, then it was dropped to 50. Now parts of it are down to 40.

And BA timetables used to be 55 minutes Edinburgh-Heathrow, now it is an hour and 20.

That's progress, I guess!

What you suspected of me? You know nothing about me.

Cross the FRB five times each way and tell me how many vehicles are below 50mph. Across all Greater London bridges, 85% of traffic exceeds the limit.

Why is that? Go on, think about it.
