Midge Killing Machines
Discussion
Recently moved into our house in September last year and chatting to the neighbour he was saying that the "midges" can be an absolute nighmare where we are come summer.
As their are 3 converted steading where we stay he was suggesting each of us getting a "midge killing" machine so we can reduce the population and hopefully make summer a little bit more "bite free".
I have done a quick search and there appears to be 2 major players in the market:
Predator Dynamic:
http://www.calor.co.uk/predator-dynamic-midgeater....
Mosquito Magnet:
http://www.midge-terminator.co.uk/midge-traps.html...
Just wondering whether anyone has used any of these and whether they would recommend them.
George
Ps Did notice an article in the Scotman where the maker of the Predator was being sued: http://www.scotsman.com/news/scotland/top-stories/...
but I do not know whether they are still in business

We've got one and it is fantastic. We run it from spring to Autumn and it's amazing how large an area around the house is midge free. Yes it uses a cylinder a month and the stocking bag needs emptying every 4-5 days in the summer months. The tablets are not cheap but you can sit out in the comfort of being midge free.

Out in the darkest regions of Africa, we came across a cute device on one of our trips to RSA. A heater pad, into which was inserted a tablet ,which killed mozzies in the room. Mrs WM ,was a martyr to a mozzie bite- her leg ( e.g) would swell up, but with these in place, even after a few days of use , she never got bitten. I've seen similar on Asda shelves for foreign use, but midges are similar, so I'd give it a try. Me - up to the upper regions of the lowlands, I'm immune to the midges, but Highland ones- I run a mile as they look on me as nectar.

The one messy bit is emptying the stocking bag and there are always some live ones which will still bite.
So whilst we're on the subject SWMBO and I are heading up for the Doune Hillclimb in June (20/21st) plus a bit of touring in the hairdressers.
She's just watched Alan Fricking Titchmarsh in the Highlands and is now petrified she'll suffer midges as she's a bit of a magnet for them.
So two questions:-
1) Is it likely to be a problem in June?
2) Can anyone recommend anti-midge cream, spray etc. etc?
I normally use Jungle Formula when fishing - anything better?
TIA,Pewe.

We have one called midge buster which is effective. Run it from spring to autumn and as mentioned earlier if you get the neighbours to run one too the effect is more than doubled I'd say. Also look at your drainage. If you can drain boggy spots to as far away as possible that helps massively too.

Try " Smidge " its a great midge repellent : ) http://midge.myshopify.com/
From experience of "parking up" and opening windows to let ciggie smoke out, (and Midges in) -if you get some in, go for a drive with windows open- they will get dragged out. Just thinking back- my old Grandad never got bothered. He smoked a pipe and was a weather beaten old sea dog. As i mentioned in a previous post, I never got bothered by Mozzies abroad on those parts which had tanned.
The one thing to remember with the midge machines is that they are not a quick fix. Ideally it takes a couple of seasons for you to really notice the difference. My father has had one in his garden for 5/6 years and there is a massive difference now. Bottle of gas per month is usual but it is worth it in the long term. I used to sell them and although not cheap definitely worth it in the long term
