A very interesting read.......
We have booked to do this starting 6th sept in our F type jag.
Really looking forward to it.
Anyone able to tell me what 02 phone reception is like? I'm not expecting it to be great but some reception would be nice

But I'm sure in some areas you could go from nothing to good in a few hundred meters.
Doing the "500" on Wednesday(24th.August) from central Scotland with 3 Corvettes and a resto-mod 68 Mustang over 3 nights. Stopping over in Kylesku,Dornoch and Aviemore(Thunder in the Glens attendees).Any "must" stops we should be taking other than Dunrobbin castle,Culloden and Brodie castle?Cheers in advance.

When do you expect to be at Brodie Castle?164 coupe said:
Booked up for this next month. Going after the schools go back, and mid week, so should be quieter. Coming from Aberdeen, first night at Tongue, then second night at Torridon.
Did this last week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and loved every minute. Timed really well for the exceptional weather too! Can't recommend it enough. Mrs-lad and myself have just returned from our 1500+ mile version of the 500.
What stunning scenery and fabulous people.
I can completely understand the juxtaposition of the 500. It's loved by hoteliers and shop owners, less so by the folk whose previously peaceful life has been turned upside down by the constant stream of traffic where it had once not existed.
There's plenty still for us to explore in the Highlands, but when we return we shall plot a route to pi$$ off as few people as possible.
Awesome.

Great info on this thread, some amazing scenery too. We've decided to ditch our annual euro trip in favour of this for August 2017. Looks like we'll do well to avoid the rain...let's see.
We only have a 4 day window this year so driving up from Midlands on a a Friday to Inverness and then 2 days for the NC500. What is a sensible halfway point? Durness perhaps? We are thinking of going anti clockwise so hitting the east first up to JOG and then the east side day 2. Would this be against the natural flow of tourist traffic or is there little difference? Our convoy will be 3 and not there to set any records but we are suckers for a great view/scenery!
The other option reading this would be to travel up along east side to Durness or close and then head back along the same route, hadn't considered that previously...
Only booked accommodation in Inverness yet so have some options, if anyone has a view on a good halfway point that would be great.

The main benefit of going clockwise is that you're on the right side of the road to stop off when you're going along the north coast.
Last time I was up there we stayed overnight in Thurso. Not the most exciting of places, but walking out of the bar at 11.00pm it was still practicaly daylight

Time lapse vid of most of the route can be seen here, good for getting an idea of what's in store.

Good point...plus reading some more on the matter with the west side being pretty special, might even get to halfway and turn back and go back down the way we came GetCarter said:
