Nasty and very large pot hole outside Chapelhall, off the roundabout going over the flyover bridge.

It's on the left side near the pavement. Was at least 2 feet long, 3/4 inches deep and has slowly been getting worse over the last few weeks. It's part of a larger patch of poorly repaired road and right where lorry tyres will rip it apart.

8 cars last night hit it, bursting one or both tyres on left side on each car.

All bar one didn't have a spare tyre, just that crap can of sealant. So they had to get flatbed recovery home.
Not the sort of thing you want to wait for at 11.30pm.

Either nlc, or amey highways will be getting a large bill for the repairs to cars.

Or they'll write a letter telling the owners the road was last inspected on xx/01/16 and that it is classified as an xyz road so gets inspected every 2 months and therefore they are not in breach of their duty of care and it basically sucks to be the vehicle owners.

Had it done to me in the past.

Its really is essential that people report pot holes to force the issue, once a pothole is reported they have to fix it within a set period of time or they are demonstrably negligent and liable for all costs.

AJM - I passed here last night just before 10pm and saw several cars parked up and wondered if this had been due to the road surface as there was no sign of bump etc.

If it is relevant, I have a paper trail from last week where I raised concerns about this exact issue and to be fair to them, I emailed them on the 2nd, got an email back on the 3rd and a phone call on the 4th and the guy was really helpful and explained everything that was happening around this junction. The traffic lights were removed almost immediately on receipt of my email and this was probably helped by the fact that their office overlooks this roundabout and they could see the gridlock it was causing in rush hour.

My email said

I am writing to complain and get your thoughts on the current works at the A8 Chapelhall exit area. Now before I start, I know these are huge works and inconvenience is to be expected.

However two specific issues

1. The road surface from the bridge over the A8 to the new roundabout that has been built is absolutely shocking. The surface is broken up so much that cars are now zig sagging their way over the surface. Now I know that there is no point in totally resurfacing this road at this point but something surely can be done that isn't simply patch repairs which has been done to no effect.

2. There are temporary traffic lights on the Boness Rd between Holytown and the roundabout at Eurocentral. Now this road has been like this for a while but with two lanes with cones separating them. But now there are temporary lights in place which during rush hour are causing total havoc. It took me 15 mins to travel between the two roundabouts today. When the lights are green, traffic only gets so far until it gets to the roundabout and then needs to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. Meanwhile the inside lane that is coned off looks to be in exactly the same position and condition as the lane that was being used for the traffic before so what is the point and need for the traffic lights? Why can we not have one lane of traffic going each direction? It could be argued that you could probably take away all the cones completely and the space that they are taking up would free up enough space for two lanes of traffic and still leave enough working space on the inside.

Can someone please review this and visit the area concerned in rush hour and see for yourself what the issue is. As I said at the beginning, I realise these works don't come without inconvenience but they also don't need to cause more inconvenience than necessary.

I look forward to hearing from you

Regards

This is their email back to me and has the relevant contact details.

Thank you for your enquiry dated 2 February in connection with the M8 M73 M74 Motorway Improvements project. In line with Scottish Government guidelines, a written response should be issued to you within 20 working days.

However, if you would prefer to discuss your concerns, Scottish Roads Partnership, the project contractor, has a dedicated Community Liaison Team (CLT) and is committed to keeping local communities and road users informed as the project progresses. If you could please provide a day time telephone number, I will arrange for a member of the CLT to call you to discuss this issue.

They also work out of an office in Newhouse Ind Estate beside Honeywell so they know exactly what the state of play is with this road so I really don't think they will have a leg to stand on with knocking back any claim.

If you need any more info then please let me know.

Cheers

Craigie.

I live in Chapelhall and walk that road daily with the dug. Usually got my hi vis jacket on as the lights are out in the area.

It's shocking how poor the road surface going from the roundabout at penny car wash up to the bridge was.
Utter joke, all they did was throw tar down near it, didn't smooth it or join it to existing surfaces.

I took to straddling the lane and putting the right side of the potholes under the car. As did plenty others.

That corners been getting worse for months. Plus the amount of aholes who try and soak you with the water that collects in it when you walk past is terrible. I took to stopping before the splash zone and mouthing wker at them as they aimed for you... hehe

If it's been reported then that holds the cars that got damaged last night in good standing for getting cash back, the police were out at it as well and moved comes to stop other cars hitting it.

As for the lights at eurocentral/Newhouse roundabout.
That was a joke. The queue went through Chapelhall past the library for getting past them...

Re the lights - I suggested to the guy that they were there because it was easier to close off that lane than pick up all the barriers after the wind had knocked them over. he didn't disagree......

However he did advise that the lights will be coming back shortly when they need to take away the inside lane for the formation of the new roundabout at Eurocentral - that is goingt o be a right pain in the neck.

I live in Holytown and commute to Glasgow usually down through Bellshill to the M74 at the old zoo but this has been gridlocked due to the North Rd in Bellshill being closed.

Never mind it will soon be light enough to start commuting by bike again - I can do door to door on my bike in 45 mins, car regularly takes longer than that!

Lost a tyre to an Edinburgh pothole last week, London Road. I've already put a claim in from the council, will be taking it further if it is rejected.

Edinburgh's roads are getting worse. They've never been good, but they are seriously third world now.

Have to say I've never seen them this bad. Potholes just seem to be cropping up everywhere at the moment.

Potholes is one thing but general quality of roads surfaces is like in the 3rd world country... It all comes down to quality of materials and workmanship as well as lack of thought during planning (i.e. Trenches dug up in newly resurfaced roads etc.)

This is my area of specialty - my company produces highly effective software to prevent this - we sell it extensively in the USA despite being based in Scotland - the Scottish councils won't even let us in the door to talk about the problem, they deny it exists.

The daft thing is roads works are supposed to be coordinated there is a system believe it or not

Utilities give notice and are not supposed to go in for a year after re surfacings

There's one just up the road from me that keeps being 'repaired'.

This has been ongoing for weeks. They attempt to sort it, lasts a very short while, then within a week or so you can see the material has all come out and scattered. I've seen the traffic cone moved back and forward a few times now. Is it that hard a job to get right? It must be.

The A737 around Beith and entering Kilwinning has stretches of potholes in both locations. Nightmare of a road at the best of times.
I had to put a new tyre on the car last week, I asked the garage to put the car up on the ramp and saw a further 2 tyres had sidewall damage. So 3 tyres and a 4 wheel alignment bill is going to North Ayrshire Council.
