Hi, I asked on supermotojunkie.com why all the threads for my bike are from back when it was new and I generally lamented the fact that a lot of the forum members seemed to buy stuff as soon as it came out in a sort of impatient child like way.

I was NOT expecting the back lash:

http://supermotojunkie.com/showthread.php?189114-W...

Here are some quotes from the thread

Let's say you are looking for a girl to start a long term committed relationship with and you get to choose between a brand new virgin who has never been ridden or a girl that has some mileage on her, she looks okay with maybe a couple of blemishes, but you have no real idea about her past; how hard she's been ridden, used and abused, or if she maybe has a dirty secret hiding that flairs up a couple months into the relationship? I know which one I choose if I have the option.

I've gotten just as excited buying a new bike as I have a used bike. Just depends on the bike. But I will say, buying new has never, ever sucked. Can't say the same about buying used, but that's part of the fun.

My only advice: Get a real job, move away from home, save your money and buy a new bike at least once in your life.

But overall, I agree with Organ Donor....why do you give a runny st what anyone else does? Live you life, don't waste it worrying about st you can't control.

I have nothing against old stuff.
I restored/fabricated/customized a 70 year old car from the ground up - every tiny little piece. I had to make a lot of it from scratch. I like working on st.
But with a bike, (that I am frequently way out in the middle of nowhere on) I like knowing what it has been thru and how it was maintained.
Then once I have that shiny new bike I ride it into the ground for up to eight years and then off it.
I feel sorry for the person who gets it after me because I know it is very seriously tired by then.
That's what I am trying to avoid by buying new - someone else's worn out old sled.
Plus...new bikes really are THAT much better by the time 8 years go by.

I buy brand new cars, I upgrade my computers often, I have expensive taste and like the latest and greatest !!! LOL

I know I'll get flak for posting this here (I'm a big boy, I can take it), but I bought my WR250X three years ago used, bought my 690 SMC last October used, and sold both 3 weeks ago and bought a brand new leftover 2015 FZ09 with zero km's on the clock. I still love supermotos and my next bike will probably be another sumo, but for now I have my first sportbike. I know, I know...

One of the best parts about it is that it's brand spanking new.
In general, I don't like used stuff (there's nothing wrong with used, it's just not my cup of tea), and I don't mind paying for the "piece of mind" of knowing what it's been through, how it was maintained, and if there's a problem, it's my fault. Not to mention that new vehicles just plain work perfectly...

One thing you said was that you like making a bike "your own". How is that different with a new bike vs a used bike? If you're buying and/or fabricating parts to customize it, you're replacing what's there anyways, so it doesn't make a difference if it was stock (new) or aftermarket (used/ pre-customized).

As I said in one of your other threads on this topic: "Stop complaining... You're welcome !!!"
It's people like me who make it possible for people like you to buy things. I'm not trying to belittle you at all. I'm just stating a fact. It takes somebody like me to buy new stuff, so that somebody like you can buy it from me when I'm done with it.

And most of all, as others have said, WHO CARES what other people are doing with their money, it's THEIR money !!!
Can you believe these people are getting so worked up!? I have not insulted them at all!

Personally, I think it's a waste of money buying something new. Why take the depreciation hit? Why not wait a couple of years until it has a good used price tag and make do until then?

On the threads on forums I keep finding posts lusting after the latest shiny model of a given motorbike which to me, at least, seems a bit sad. Does a new one really do things that much better? It still relies on two wheels, an engine and handlebars doesn't it!?

Any chance I could have some "backup" over there, everyone seems to be against me.

I can't believe you actually let it irritate you so much in the first place that some people like to buy brand new that you bothered to post about it to be honest.

Also if it's predominately a yank forum they do generally just enjoy a good bit of drama.

Like they said if some people didn't enjoy a nice shiny 0 miles bike then you'd have nothing to buy,

Actually, I'm not bothered.

You went onto an American forum and expected to get some sense. Guess what? You will see hell freeze over before that happens

Surely people on the internet can buy what they want, can't they?

They're getting worked up because you're questioning what they do with the money they've worked hard for when it's nothing to do with you at all.

You're saying it's a waste of money to buy new, when it's obviously not for the people that do it. Why did you choose your current bike instead of some 15 year old clunker? Because you could.

Two wheels, an engine, handlebars, and a st load of components which also age and decay based on use and exposure. What's more after a year or three, this is entirely at your expense. Time being the one expense some people apparently put no value on when they buy complex old performance machines and pretend they're "just as good", as new ones.

Not to mention attractive finance options, the warranty and other offers, and that all important "X-factor" of knowing this one has been made "just for you", when you buy new. No scratches, no scuffs, no spidering of panels. All perfect.

That said, I've never done it. I just bought a 2013 over new plate, if I'm honest it was because of price despite the new one offering no advantages and worse paint colours.

Stalk them, track them down, administer a powerful anaesthetic so it paralyses them, then slice off their faces and wear their facial skin over your own whilst knocking one out over MCN.

It is the ONLY way.

Why is it sad? People spend their money how they want, and some people want a new toy. On your argument why buy most motorbikes at all. Rationally 99% of bikes are a waste of money. All you need is a cg125, and only then if it is your only mode of transport. Anything beyond that is a waste of money, it's just a matter of if you judge that to be a worthwhile waste of money or not, as with most things in life.

Anyone else thinking they'd go with the girl with a bit of mileage? Better to be taught than teach.

Well, to be honest I don't think you should be surprised really after reading what you posted:

What for not following the latest farkle like a fking sheep? Get the fk outta here, I am a man and a stand on my own.

That shows that you lack the passion.

To me that doesn't sound like a true enthusiast, just sounds like you like trivial shiny things whatever they may be.

The butt hurt is strong in this one!

Funny how everyone gets offended by this topic! Figure I've hit a nerve with some of ya'll! Oh well, feel free to waste your money.
New stuff is st and boring, you can't do your own work on it, you can't modify it. New stuff is not for true enthusiasts!!

If you want to waste your money modifying new stuff that's up to you. Why the hell would you change something from OEM? You think you know better than the engineers you utter moron?

What does this have to do with socialism you idiot?

You are quite the aggressive little nerd aren't you?

I would come to Canada and batter you if I wanted to do so

I have only ever had a part time job and still live with my mom so I have a lot of time but not a lot of money. Fixing niggles is part of the fulfilment for me though.
