One of my client's is looking to put on on outdoor event and needs a big open space in or near Newcastle. Ideally it will hold 500+ cars and be easily accessible.

Anyone got any ideas of any big carparks or areas of hard ground smile

Yes, we took a one-day Licence from Gateshead Borough Council for our 2008 TVRCC BNG. Good site with easy access and good walking distance into Newcastle over the bridge. Toilets and catering available in the Sage and we were able to use the amphitheatre area at the top of the steps for trade-stands etc. Gateshead Council were very helpful even letting us store barriers and equipment within the adjacent bridge equipment room. It was a perfect location for our event being a level tarmacked area, and having great view over all the iconic Tyneside buildings and bridges.

As an alternative, there have been quite a few events at the Racecourse recently which again is a decent venue if you're OK parking on grass (albeit very well cared-for grass). Looking at entry ticket prices though I think the Racecourse could be much more expensive.

How about the Park and Ride car park at Newcastle Great Park? It's very large and is deserted on a weekend. Mere seconds from the A1 too.
