Offshore at the moment?
Discussion
My wee bro (34) is wanting to get into the offshore sector.
Over the last year he's spend over a grand on various courses, and medicals, and has cover letter and cv ready and waiting. He's looking to get into the steward/catering side of the business, but would concider anything tbh.
Just wondered if anyone could suggest a few companies/agencies?
Thanks

ESS and Sodexo spring to mind. Also if I remember correctly Maersk have their own stewards and don't contract out so they could be worth a shot.Over the last year he's spend over a grand on various courses, and medicals, and has cover letter and cv ready and waiting. Lot's of people I know trying to get into this lately.
Would it be worth doing some sort of catering/food hygiene type course?
Just wondering if anyone could give me some advice on my future career path.
I've got the option of two jobs - one being an apprentice instrument tech or a trainee instrument designer.
Really looking for the one with the best career progression. The designer appeals to me more to be honest where my dad (used to work offshore) is trying to push me towards the technician apprenticeship.
Just looking for a second opinion as he doesn't know much about the designer side of the industry.

chaps,
I could really do with some help on this one. I work for a company that make valves and we have a customer that is experiencing an issue with one on a north sea platform. I have been asked to go out there and investigate the issue and report back.
The trouble is about 10 days ago I had some cannabis, I know its a stupid thing to do and I deserve a lecture but I am properly bricking it now. I have a desk job normally with nothing to do with O&G and we never have drug tests (no excuse I know). I am certainly not a regular user and I would never go to a rig under the influence, this has just been sprung on me yesterday.
Am I likely to get in to hot water with this, do north sea rigs test contractors as a matter of course and would 2 weeks be enough time for it to leave my system? I would rather come straight out and tell my boss now than fail a test at a heliport.
thanks for reading
James

Maxwell,
What do you want from working in O&G, Instrument techs work on the equipment, fault find the problem and fix it or install and commission the stuff while your designers are they guys who doing the CAD drawings for loop drawings hook ups and other things, make up work packs this sorta stuff. You most likely wouldn't be offshore as it would most be in office.
James,
Have you done your medical for offshore travel or would you have to have this done before you travel? If you haven't your most likely to be pulled up if it hasn't left your system.
How much have you smoked, do you normally smoke alot or was this a one off?

Thanks for getting back to me, I did a medical about a year ago for my offshore stuff, I have never been offshore so I don't know the protocol, would I normally do another medical the day before or the same day?James,

I ate some in brownies, it was a one off, nothing before or since. My job role normally has nothing to do with the rigs and this has come up out of the blue really.
thanks again for the help!

If your not going away for 2 weeks then its likely to out of your system by then and you should be ok. I've yet to have a drugs test outside of the offshore medical.I ate some in brownies, it was a one off, nothing before or since. Thanks for the reply! I've done a lot of research and both jobs sound great so it really boils down to what has the best career progression into management etc. What do you want from working in O&G, Instrument techs work on the equipment, fault find the problem and fix it or install and commission the stuff while your designers are they guys who doing the CAD drawings for loop drawings hook ups and other things, make up work packs this sorta stuff. Nah, MOG Use ESS for stewards as well. Statoil are about the only operator that contract catering in-house (bar Snorre & Statfjord) Lot's of people I know trying to get into this lately.

Did the new EBS lifejacket training today at Falck Nutec Dyce - miles better than the old LAP rebreather jackets!!!
What is the story with this? Need to renew my survival before December - do I need to do both (ignoring that I don't go offshore in the NS...) or is it all one course now? Also - my survival is from Norway, from a company apparently not on OPITO's list - will a refresher do me, or will I need to do a full course?
