Any recommendations for slightly off the wall things to do in Edinburgh during the day this Friday?

I've heard about a wee museum associated with the Royal College of Surgeons which sounds a bit weird in a gruesome kind of way.

It's that sort of non tourist mainstream thing I'm looking for.

Cheers,

That'll be surgeone hall...
Although I local, its somewhere I always fancied going but never got round to it. It used to only open 1 day a year and the tickets were always sold out real early. But I just did a quick trawl http://www.rcsed.ac.uk/site/455/default.aspx and it seems its open every day now. I'll have to go myself then smile

Or you could try Mary Kings close http://www.realmarykingsclose.com/, walkable from Surgeons Hall. That's quite interesting seeing all the old closes/buildings that they've just built over. The tour is a bit long though and too much 'spooky' stuff for the tourists, but the old buildings are real neat - you'd never believe all thus stuff was under your feet on the Royal Mile.

And in the same area...not so off the wall...you could do worse than seeing the Scottish crown, sceptre etc at the castle...oldest crown jewels in Europe I gather. Inflate chest and feel superior to the southern neighbours...

And as for things to do in the Edinburgh area, I would normally have said drop my my place and help with the car wink, except on Friday I'm off to Elgin for a funeral frown

The Museum of Childhood on the Royal Mile is well worth a visit - seriously! Loads of "Oh, I had one of these" etc. Brilliant toy cars, trains, the whole nine yards. And you can always nip into Deacon Brodie's for a pint afterwards if you don't mind taking out a mortgage for one.

Good one, thanks John. This was something I had buried at the back of my mind but couldn't remember the details. Cheers. smile

How's the car going by the way?

Good shout for another time but I won't have a car on this occasion.

Zoo ...
Did that when we went to pick up the car. I reckon it's a bliddy swick! There's nothing in those cages. They say the animals are asleep but I have my doubts.

Eric, you should nip in by KH on way back up the road to continue the running in process, Hot Marques at 6 pm. I am booked but will go only if dry, Exige tyres now a bit baldy and it will not be fun on wet A90 nevermind wet KH.

Hope you have an interesting day in Auld Reekie. I'm taking my car to MH on Friday to have the geometry set up properly. I think I've sorted out the gremlins by fitting a new fuel pump, but won't really know until Boyndie. Had another test at E last week. Mike and Darren pitched up with their OMS which was also in need of attention and they got it sorted. Nice to see - and hear - it in wide open spaces on the straight half mile! I was going to camp at Boyndie, but chickened out and am booked into a hotel in Banff for the Friday and Saturday. Maybe meet up for a fruit cordial?

The Royal Highland Agricultural Show is on Thu/Fri/Sat/Sun at Ingliston.
Expect Serious delays due to traffic.

Depending on your interests this may be a day out, not just agricultural but they do have car's & 4X4's, there's a whole section for horsey folk and associated tack/country clothing + a countryside area with clothes/shooting/fishing accessories + flower shows. Very good food halls with exhibits/samples of a multitude of good food and wines

There sheep sheering to watch also!

If you are out in town expect lots of country folk restraunts are busy as are hotels. (Beware of drunken young farmers)

I wish I was there, but can't make it this year.

Andy

PS It is a bit steep I think £16 entry.

mad ah sheet - forgot about that. That'll be the bridge clogged solid with the 'poor farmers' nose-to-tail in their 07 plate Mercs and Rangies. Why don't they hold the d@mn thing in the sticks somewhere and not clog up civilised folks lives with their green wellies and green quilted waitcoats....
shout and deerstalker bunnets haven't been in fashion since Sherlock Holmes was a lad

Aah shite...I'm going to clobber exiting traffic tomorrow then - my plane lands at 17:30.

That magnificent piece of road design just down the A8 near the Gyle is going to be a frigging nightmare. Well more so than usual anyway.

Combined with roadworks at the Forth Bridge - I would cut across to Kincardine Bridge and down the M9 from there...
