Knockhill Friday 27th Hot Marques 6-8pm
Discussion
Well, at last a good night of weather and fun on track, some lovely cars on show last night. How quiet was the Viper?
Stuart, good to meet you and you're more than welcome to more laps at any time, so is anyone really, just got to get a bit of suspension set-up done now, so that I can go through the bends a bit quicker. I thought the clutch was slipping badly at one point but thankfully it was just spinning the wheels [in 3rd and 4th].

Yes, a good night and not too busy on track despite number of cars including the time attack guys. Everyone on best behaviour too as far as I could see. Couple of spins (good to see you guys giving munkylargo/ultima plenty) but no red flags. Agree with comment on Viper, looks scary but emits very little noise. Very quick of course as were a lot of these time attack cars.
Your Ultima was on their pace up the straight though I reckon, looking and sounding good.

Tim,
Would have come over for a chat, but you looked kind of busy!
Missing the old car? Yes and no. Certainly miss the grunt, my Exige has only 190hp and needs thrashing to within an inch of its life to get that out of it. Wonder if I should have gone for an "S" model, thinking about aftermarket S/C.
I just didn't have the time for the constant tinkering that seems to be necessary with Ultima to get it to work properly. Lotus has been great out of the box, no reliability issues whatsoever and great to drive on track. I've done 5 trackdays/nights so far this year, with Ultima only got round to 1 or 2 a year. For a driver of my limited ability. much easier to drive Exige quick round corners too and less stressful braking for Duffus from only 100mph instead of 130 mph.
Have seen my old car once since selling, I helped Hamish the new owner with an EFI issue, hopefully he's got it sorted now. See you at next KH evening maybe.
Cheers
George

was a good night, some of the time attack cars didnt seem as fast as what i would have expected them to be though.thanks to the guy with the 993 turbo for a few laps, extremely fast car and was doing a touch over 130mph down the knockhill straight! At about 15 mins from the end one of the time attack guys came running up behind me and asked if i wanted to come out for a few laps, then after was asking me how his lines and braking points were,ermmmmmmm....

does anyone keep a note of who was clocking what? probably nowhere near the proper boys on the saturday.
i had the stop watch going on pauls lambo and the 993 turbo. paul was around the 70-72 seconds and the 993 was around 68.if you watch in one of the videos i posted the 996 GT3RS goes round in just under 60!Edited by Thevet on Monday 30th July 19:29

Big difference if the car in question weighs twice as much and is running road tyres.

Edited to Add: When I was there last weekend, IIRC the Time Attack big boys were turning in ~57 seconds in >500bhp machines. Whilst I wont argue with your times above, I would think that they are a tad optimistic.
Moreover, having been fortunate enough to drive a Murcielago on track, I can confirm that they are not the most nimble of things. Therefore IMO a time of ~70seconds is rather good going.

No Kumho treaded road tyres! Kumho sponsors the XR2 championship and Yokohama sponsor the Minis. As for the weight issue, the car and driver must be over 845kg, with me its closer to 900kg.
Ok my mistake. However, you are still comparing them with a car that weighs twice as much (Murcielago).
Moreover, you will agree that the Fiesta's are track prepped, not to mention the Coopers whereas the Lambo is still primarily a road car.

As for the Fiestas, they are able to take advantage of the comparitively compact circuit - carrying enough speed onto the back straight and then out of the hairpin to make up the performance deficeit. Also I'm fairly certain that the Yoko's on the Mini are not road tyres but I could be wrong.
