Marshals should never take photos - if you want to take photos then either register as media for the close ups or take your tabard off (overalls are different however!) and retire to a spectator area making sure your safety duties are covered and then take your pics.....Sorry to sound like a kill-joy, but if you're prepared to work as an official on motorsport events then you must put safety first and looking through a viewfinder is not the best place to do that.

LOL - sorry it's a 'bete noire' of mine as an official (12 years on Mull alone). Marshals should never be taking photos - could you imagine what would happen if one of the folks at a GP pulled their camera out instead of the blue/red/black etc flag....?

As a competitor in the events in question, I have no problems with marshals taking photos - even with flash (which is never required since our events are always in daylight).
To compare Mull and our events isn't apples with apples ... and, yes, I'm very familiar with the the Tour of Mull.
I do hope things are fine in Berks.

my fellow hairpin marshal and I set a camera on top of a hay bale and left it recording video. That way, we got footage of the cars AND were still able to see what was going on. Sure, if a car hit the bale the camera would be damaged but that's our concern.
A win-win situation though I reckon. In a situation like we sometimes have a Fintray when we are very lucky and have maybe 3 marshals on a post I see no problem with one of them taking photos. Even with 2 marshals one taking pics, the other watching the car seems fine to me.

A very pragmatic approach! The 2 on 1 off is exactly what I ask of Marshals I work with, the whole Tabard issue is more of a PR thing. What do spectators think when they see people doing a responsible safety job waving cameras about.
Eric - you're right Hilclimbing and tarmac rallying are very different, and then there's Mull
My whole point is that everyone should enjoy the event, competitors marshals and spectators, but safety should always be paramount.
BTW - Berkshire's fine, just wish I was further north..... lots further!

I have read all your replies to the topic of marshals taking photos and i may have mislead you when I did'nt mention that there is always one possibly two marshals at any given post paying close attention to the track. The chief marshals briefing always emphaises this and the fact that driver, spectator and their own safety is paramount to the safe conclusion of the event. Get yourself a holiday booked for next year during one of the Fintray weekends and I gaurantee you will have a great time. Thanks for your observations.

I have no problem with them using a camera occasionally - they cannot all keep their eye on the ball all the time - which is why the posts are well-manned.
