Found this in a yard the other day while out driving:

I'm considering this to be a long term project. it's mouldy, unloved and probably won't run. The tinkerer in me is challenged biggrin

How much should I offer to take it off his hands and is it feasible to return it to working order without bankrupting the family?

I also saw a lovely dark green Aston V8 Vantage but I think it was a runner and might be out of my price range..........

I realise this is a bit of a specialist question but I believe the auto' market in Scotland is significantly different from down South so I thought I'd ask here 1st.

I was just discussing these cars with my brother. There is a buyers guide or something in this months Practical Classics.

Looks like a good project.

As far as whether or not to do it; listen to your heart, not your heid.

... in other words, do it!

How much to offer? How about setting your limit and starting with an opening gambit of a couple of hundred.

I'm looking at the pics on a hand-held so can't see too clearly but the condition doesn't look too bad.

Keep us posted with progress.

Cheers,

They are fibreglass (I think) so rust should not be a problem. Looks like the mice have been at it - upholstery is never the cheapest to repair.

Go for it. I had one in 1987, it was great. Fast, very comfy, handled pretty well despite more than a touch of old school 911 rear engined scariness about it. Plastic body so should clean up OK. Renault V6 pretty straight forward, same with other mechanical stuff I think. Electrics might be interesting.

Not listening to my heid has got me where I am today... skint!

Yes it is fibreglass so I'm not too concerned about the bodywork of course but you're right, I'm a little concerned about the electrics and the like.

I'll pop down at the weekend and have another quiet look at it before thinking about a "I'll do you a favour and take it off your hands, mate" offer.

Kiltie - I do like your considered and practical reasoning though smile

I actually dont think this Alpine is in bad nick at all so probably not as low a figure as you think. A day would have that think spotless!

The paintwork maybe but the engine and electrics may be a different matter.

I'll take the rear perspex light covers if you buy it and eventully scrap it

Electrics can be a real pain on a car that's stood, especially french electrics, but the engines are usually quite robust (any ally engine run low on coolant will blow a headgasket, particularly a turbo).

Was down there today and got talking to the owners dad who says his boy got it there on trade plates and it's been sitting there for a couple of years at least. The tax expired in '98 !

My only worry is that there is a chunk out of the bodywork. Not all the way through but I've NO idea how easy/expensive plastic cars are to repair. Any idea how much that could cost?

What do you guys think I should go in at? I was thinking around £500 and see where I got.

Basically its fibreglass. Any lotus etc or boat builder should be able to sort the body.

Really, email mitchella or Orbut12 (get the email from the memebers list at www.renaultalpine.co.uk ) and they should be able to put you in touch with a decent garage.

If you have the space then it's easily worth a grand in parts. I haven't heard of one selling under 2k in the last few years. £500 would be v cheap.

Easily worth a grand in bits as Andy says .All looks pretty sound from those pics ,bodywork/trim will be the biggest expense.Check for dropping doors ,could be rotted pillars ,major £££££'s but thats about it .

Given the axle stands in it, and the general condition, I'd hazard a guess that there's a good chance it's a non-running project that someone is bored of, probably under pressure to get rid of and would be happy for someone to take it away for a couple few hundred quid.... worth a try.

Cheers,

Tom.

naetype,

I have come across this car as well, a friend of mine had enquired about it last year. There was some 'fatal' fault that stopped him buying it at the time, I can't remember but i will try and find out what it was.

Like you we thought it a possible cheap fast project at the time, but he ended up leaving it, oh and it's not often this guy says no to any project so it was probably something bad.

I think these are quite collectable cars now, so there must be a good reason its still lying there after all this time scratchchin

I'll find out what i can and get back to you.

There ar some bits that are virtually unobtainable, friend in the NE has one and Renault & Alpine couldn't help with spares if I remember rightly, they were waiting for about a dozen enquiries before remanufacture I think!!
Also seem to remember that the tyre size is no longer available (rears). Thats on a turbo.
Nearly bought one myself back 15 or so years ago, thought it a better option than a 911, half the price and more accomodation, a 6 foot bloke fits in the rear seats ok whereas in a 911 he was bent double.
