after years of driving old quattros i feel the need for a change. I have been here before but always put of as i haven't been able to find a car that is as fun to drive and to own as the old coupe. The B5 platform from audi i always thought was a bit dead so i ruled out the 2.7tt S4's. The S3 never dinged my bell but its a good car. Every other option has been a compromise... however after provocation from the missus to get something newer and safer i went looking (i meant looking as i didn't really want to change). And i test drove a 330ci sport on an X plate, utterly loved it, far more enjoyable than i was expecting... getting quite (sad) excited at the prospect of owning one. However the coupe quattro is the first car i have loved owning i bought with head and heart.. worried that i might not enjoy the bimmer... need some reassurance! *cough*

However i am in a position that i can keep the coupe quattro and the bimmer. But would i use the older slower car? hmmm choices. Anyone else been in this boat or is this another regular weekly question?

I've had half a dozen BMs and have never been dissapointed - just remember you'll never be let out at junctions!

very true! it does have a certain stigma from the yuppie era, which i did think about retrospectively, honestly i couldn't give a flying monkeys... i just love the way it drove also happens to look pretty good to.

nice to hear from a 6+ bimmer owner thats reassuring. Having had about the same in audis as well!

Hi Istoo,

I had a '02 plate 330ci Sport as my previous car, do you mean the coupe or the convertible version (always thought the codes were too similar) very good car. Lovely straight six engine, good on the road, and suberb build quality. Not the cheapest to insure or main dealer service though, but worth it!

I only changed because i need more boot space, and got the usual 'need more SPEED' bug.....

Have you considered the M3 of either E36 or E46 vintage?

If speed is your need, the 330ci will bore you after a while IMO.

Exactly what i am looking for, budgeting for an 01-02 330 sport coupe. The individual models i really like as well, interiors are a lovely finish. The insurance actually seems fairly cheap and is on a par with what i pay now for my '93 audi coupe quattro. The old quattros, and i have had a few, i have a soft spot for and are the only quick cars i have ever owned. But the drive in the BMW is as quick if not quicker but oh so different. I think thats what i want. I feel in the comfort zone in the old quattro, i know what it will or will not do. I feel the need for a RWD car with circa 150bhp/ton as the driving experience is very different to what i have grown with. Speed is a partial one, and the 330 despite having more ponies didnt feel much faster despite what the figures said on paper, but is a newer and natural replacement for me... i have tried and thought about heaps of cars in the last year, an RS2 was very close and within budget but doing 20k a year i wouldnt be able to treat it as well as it should be. In the same way i wouldn't go for an M3. The old audi is an good all rounder and this is the first car i drove and liked. I must admit i didnt expect to like it as much as i do. Is this making sense?

One fairly major point, being a lanky git, and i have tried with a helmet on in the audi coupe i either have to tilt my head 90degrees or look at the floor which has ruled out my desire to try some track days or a trip to the ring...

And i will be sacrificing the ability to drive in the white fluffy stuff, which the quattro is utterly superb at.... or should i keep it as well!

I wouldn't be going for main dealer servicing, but JD motors in Insch who are all of 300 yards from my house and the reputation they have here is second to none.

i know what you mean by the need for speed bug, i have always sacrificed brute performance for handling. although i do feel the need for a trip to knockhill for a crash course in RWD driving! Is there anything like that available there?

If you want a crash course in "How to go sideways"driving sorry I mean how to handle a RWD vehicle, Schnell is yer man, mad as a fish with a gunlaugh

Bimmer sounds like a good compromise for what you want, if you can justify it, I would keep the Audi as well, cracking car!
