It was certainly interesting! The Rowan Tree is actually the closest boozer to my house. I only use it when I'm waiting for a take-away from the Shalimar Tandoori or the New Rainbow Chinese (best fish supper in Aberdeen IMHO). The Rowan Tree isn't exactly a pleasant drinking experience but I've never felt in the least bit threatened in there. In that area, I recommend The Moonlight Bar (formerly The Seaton Arms). What used to be the lounge is now a West African restaurant popular with Nigerian and Ghanaian students. The menu is something else! As I recall, they offer such things as " bush pig" and " spicy turkey gizzard". I have a menu somewhere indoors and I'll scan it and post it up when I remember. As a matter of interest, who do you play for? Cheers, Eric The Shalimar is my favourite kebab shop and on my side of town so I don't need to traipse up Union St! Mmmmm mmmm! I was playing for The Machar. A good friend is now the captain. I played for them for a couple of seasons while at and just after uni. They were short for a match this year and I stepped in. I won too which is nice

The copper beach was burnt down following some sort of domestic row, apparently involved drugs and someone returning to the bar one night with some petrol and a match, think it was earlier this year, or last, a chap from work used to drink there.

Not one mention so far for The Grill? Possibly one of the last in town to put in a pisser for the lassies? Murdos can be interesting, similar to the Byron. The "Crit", always a riggers favourite before the train comes! (closed now I think?)

The Criterion is still open but under a new name as Frank McDougals sports bar if memory serves me right.
Murdos do a cracking Chicken in a basket, I often have it when I go there to watch the Footie on a Sat afternoon, it's no palace but I've never had an issue in there, always friendly

Could I offer the Short Mile on Great Western road? Used to be a classy end to the '201 challange'. I remember fondly the 'faux' leater seats the like only ever seen in a 1980's Metro. Nice.
Still not as good as the 524 though. You ventured in yet Kiltie?

Another recommendation is the Hen Hoose( here). Two prices in there, one for regulars and one for visitors (such as myself ) Tangent alert, the fragrant Mrs DTP sold one of her old CDs to the HH's DJ during a rare foray to the Thainstone car boot sale the other week.

On that theme, two more spring to mind ... ... the very unfortunate (and I mean that) incident in " Filthy McNasty's" - tragic for those connected and, as I understand it, quite devastating for the individual apparently directly involved ... ... and the bloke who set fire to himself in the doorway of " The Star and Garter" which I only heard about a few days ago (we were living in Norway at the time) ... Wait a minute though ... this was supposed to be a happy thread! Cheers, Eric And the Covenanters in Kincorth with it's high profile murder...

Murdo's used to be my local when I stayed round the corner. I lived nearer to The Fountain and the White Horse but one pint in each was enough for a lifetime.

Very interesting thread here, I am fairly new to Aberdeen (started university here in September 2010) so don't really know that many places. I live fairly near the Balaclava (which looks bloody terrifying) and the Mither Tap, but after reading this I think I will steer clear of them Not very interesting, but Ma Cameron's near Belmont Street is nice, and a bit different. The Old Blackfriers is good too, I am there most Tuesdays for the pub quiz. Even won it once! Will need to try these places on George street, they are very near me. Need to talk my mates into going to a pub, rather than going out clubbing occasionally first!
