I would have thought the best way would be channel tunnel for £49 per car and 35 minute journey sitting with your car. I've done this when the kids were young and we took them to Disney. I day would get us from Glasgow/ish to France. More time on the ferry and driving through another country? And it costs more. Or perhaps that is what we should be doing to make a trip out of it? What is everyone else's thoughts?
What do people think of using a company like this to arrange it all? It also gives us an idea of costs.
Monaco F1 2011
I know they are sold out for this year, but all we would need is Chunnel £49, fuel and food. This would be for the F1 only, if we spent another night somewhere while doing other roads, we could book that separately.
What do you think?

That looks pretty pricey to me. For 2 people that would work out at least £3700 + fuel + ferry/tunnel.
I've had a quick look at costs and reckon there isn't much in it between getting the ferry from somewhere up north or driving down south and getting the tunnel.
Approx costs based on averaging 20mpg (all return milages) & £1.40 a litre.
Glasgow to Newcastle, 320 miles = £100
Ferry £350
Glasgow - Folkestone, 960 miles = £300
Overnight stop? = £100 (possibly £200) if stop both ways.
Tunnel = £100
Personally I would rather get over to mainland europe ASAP rather than trek down to Folkestone which isn't going to be much of a fun drive. Likewise once over there I'd prefer to have an overnight stop somewhere on the way down to Monaco.
According to the Automobile Club De Monaco website, the most expensive tickets for 2011 are €220 for quali & €450 for race day with a 10% discount if you buy both. Works out about £560.
Done a few sums and based on taking the ferry I reckon on the following...
Glasgow to Newcastle, 320 miles = £100
Ferry £350
Amsterdam to Monaco, 1700 miles = £550
Overnight stop = £150
Accommodation for GP (3 nights, £200 a night) = £600
Best GP tickets (2 people, both days) = £1120
Total = £2870
That works out about a grand cheaper than the organised trip, including getting there. Or have I got my maths wrong?!
Another option I wondered about was renting a big villa as it could work out cheaper than staying in a hotel???
Due to a combination of just watching the Top Gear episode where Hammond drives the Daytona along the French Riveria & racing a 512BB around Monaco on GT5, I can't wait!!

It will always be more expensive than you think. If you're wanting to add the Monaco GP onto a week long driving holiday, that includes a blast round the 'Ring and some of the Alpine Passes, I'd guess you're talking in the region of £5k per car, more if there's 2 people.
And taking the Chunnel is madness unless you're stopping off in both directions. Much easier to get the ferry from Rosyth/Newcastle/Hull, then hit the continent from there having slept all night, rather than having driven for 10 hours before even arriving in Europe.

I've got a couple of questions?
How do we secure the tickets for all of us? I'm already getting ear ache about this, I'm not going through it for 18 months then not getting a ticket for the GP. ( That sounds grumpy, I'm not, I'm just asking )
Big Villa, sounds ok but how many people can we fit in?

Get me a ticket while you are at it Cuz. Agree that the cost will probably end up being more expensive that planned.
I'm not that fussed about tickets for the Saturday although would be good if the price is OK. I only really included the most expensive seats as a comparison to the package deal that was suggested.
Regarding the villa idea, I haven't looked into it but no doubt there will be a variety of options. Just a thought.
I think it was suggested that if we block book seats early enough then it should be ok for getting tickets for everyone. Nearer the time I guess we'll need to confirm numbers and find out when the tickets go on sale.

Race tickets or for qualy as well will not be a problem. If you register an interest or have been before you get an email when the website opens for tickets. All you have to agree is who is buying which seat and have a contingency plan and then everyone gets online on the first night to beat the organised tour guys scooping what you wanted.........worked for me with no probs.I'm not that fussed about tickets for the Saturday although would be good if the price is OK. How many tickets are you allowed to buy in the one go?
I bought 6 sets last time but to be honest you stand into financial danger if you buy tickets for other people..............I think its a commitment best done by each individual and just get seats adjacent by being organised
Anyway there is no way you can talk to the guy next to you when the cars are running...it really is that loud.

Typically, when do they go on sale?
For 2011 race it was 16 November 2010........I started this thread when the tickets opened: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
The only place to buy tickets without mark up is the official site.
A few ideas for you folks if you want the cost kept down -
1. Stay in Menton in France, it is a very small cheap train journey to Monaco.
2. Try for z1 tickets on the Sunday, it is standing but in a good position (across from all the lovelies on the boats) the tickets are around £50.
3. If you want qualiy tickets wait just before it starts and pick up tickets with a meal included from one of the eateries on the track (we managed a buffet meal and start finish line seats for £40 a head).
You should try and make it to the Cannes film festival also as it is not far away, if you are brave the week before or after (can't rember which) it is the XXX film festival

How long would everyone want to go away for? I'd quite like to stay down at the south of France for a good few days after making all the effort to get there.
Would 2 or 3 days for the trip back seem about right or would you want to just blast back up through the alps and get home ASAP?
Who wants to include Italian factory tours in the trip?
