WiFi Offshore (North Sea)

2+1, it was designed as a perminant solution 6-7 years ago by a specific company. Dubious legality refers to it as a perminant solution, that it is not! However it is a 'better than the current way' to allowing more POB onboard to provide an LQ upgrade/shutdown/drilling ops or other event needing bodies. Call it a compromised solution. As a cabin it is descent, well finished and will be better than what you have. If its been granted by the HSE i would hazard a guess it is in progress...
You've pretty much hit the nail on the head with what they are planning. More bodies for more work. Which is needed. It isn't a bad thing per-say if there was a permanent solution in the offing. Obviously the company are saying there is a plan for a more permanent solution but there are doubts about that leaving us with 2+1 as the fix until the HSE slap an improvement notice down which won't happen over night. Failry political. Getting back to the 2+1 it does seem to eat into a fair amount of already limited cabin space. I guess we will see how it works out and getting back on topic if we get the wifi!
Depends on capability. I ran a vessel where the ROV crew set-up a wi-fi router for use from their cabins, but we had to switch it off when the guys either streamed live radio or TV, or left Skype idling in the background. That would just feck it up for everyone else.
Some of the Norwegian platforms have mobile phone connectivity though.

Talisman are planning to roll out wireless in public areas, just prepping up for 1st trial on one of the sites.
It becomes more of a no-brainer once you've got a decent comms link, not all assets have this. It wasn't unusual for some sites to be on a 256K data link until recently for all data systems!

It's just the bandwidth that's the problem from my point of view, all the technical issues are easily solved. I've set it up on a few diving/rov vessels for the poor suckers in the compression chambers but with the strict instructions that it'd get disabled if people started taking the piss.

Its crazy to think that its not been introduced through all rigs. Being a service hand i rarely see the same rig twice, which makes it frustrating when you need access to your work emails and there is usually only a handfull of pcs with net access, which is usually tied up with the 100 + offshift personel. Wifi is the way forward!

Totally agree with all the above , nothing worse than filling in a form then waiting 2+ days to get a password from the beach before you
can even get on a computer its a joke

I also work in Denmark, on a Maersk drilling rig. The problem is bandwidth, which is poor. When 20 guys are all trying to download movies, footie, porn or whatever, it just slows the system down to crawl.
All personnel on board have access to the system, but it sometimes switches off at random, to prevent guys from downloading too much at once, especially if they are asleep. It was common practice to download a movie and wait 6 hours for it to download, thus tying up the bandwidth. WiFi is no different.
There have been calls to check out the possibility of broadband, but with a mobile unit, it can't be hard wired, but would have to be provided by satellite, or a line of sight microwave to a platform, which is not always possible.

Not sure all the Maersk units have Wifi, i.e ARO, Dan Bravo, Harald don't... the rest do for sure.

To add to the list:
Borgsten (boggin') Dolphin, everywhere inside, although when I was on recently all the service hands had our wireless access revoked.
John Shaw, everywhere inside and also out on the pipe deck if you leave your workshop container door open and it's facing the right way.
Sedco 714, from which I am posting this.
