Could come in handy for those who frequent various North Sea platforms (i.e. me ), was gonna create a list of installations with this facility, as apparently more & more are getting this facility. So I'll start:
Bruce
Lomond
North Everest
Appreciate your input chaps
Ocean Nomad has wifi to rooms. Many rigs I have been on have wifi connection but no access to anyone except co rep/OIMBruce

Out on the NTVL and there is Wifi but it is switched off and are not allowed to use it. Was out in the middle East 7 or 8 years ago on a GSF rig and they had wifi back then. Worked on the Eldfisk Bravo at the end of 2009 and the Norwegians have faster broadband than my house.

I also work in Denmark, on a Maersk drilling rig. The problem is bandwidth, which is poor. When 20 guys are all trying to download movies, footie, porn or whatever, it just slows the system down to crawl.
All personnel on board have access to the system, but it sometimes switches off at random, to prevent guys from downloading too much at once, especially if they are asleep. It was common practice to download a movie and wait 6 hours for it to download, thus tying up the bandwidth. WiFi is no different.
There have been calls to check out the possibility of broadband, but with a mobile unit, it can't be hard wired, but would have to be provided by satellite, or a line of sight microwave to a platform, which is not always possible.

Interesting topic here folks, the company I work for is involved in industrial wireless for haz environments (Shell/BP on/off shore). I'm not close to the details but one of my teams does this and is working with the "IT / Systems / Platform" groups and often the conversation is around cost / IT understanding of production environments rather than the technology itself.
We have got many hundreds of successful (and high performance at that) solutions working in remote environments, including all those exotic locations such as new well head areas in Iraq and the like.
From reading the comments here, and the issues which are all solvable, would be interested in what you feel holds it up from being deployed in your environments from your own perspectives !

sending a pm... but yes fixed installations should be wifi enabled, i see this as an eventuality for futureproofing LQ's. Semis and floaters will be a little harder depending on circumstances by the physical nature. kinker_rocks said:
Accomodation upgrade in the plans here on Gannet (read squeeze 3 men in a cabin). Wifi has been muted can't see it getting past the fun police though. Un-authorised fun is not encouraged.
It would be very popular with the regulars here though!
HSE only grant this if the LQ is to be upgraded. Only one company make the 2+1 which was of dubious legality when they thought of it. It would be very popular with the regulars here though!

Nice to know a fellow TIV owner is out there i am heading back out friday
Lomond
North Everest
Shell Sean Papa (SNS)
Transocean Labra
Britannia
Buzzard
Galaxy3 (in heli admin)
Gulfaks C
Veslefrik
Its crazy to think that its not been introduced through all rigs. Being a service hand i rarely see the same rig twice, which makes it frustrating when you need access to your work emails and there is usually only a handfull of pcs with net access, which is usually tied up with the 100 + offshift personel. Wifi is the way forward!

Funny you should mention this as the HSE have were on last week about this. They have approved 3 man cabins as a temporoary solution. This means z-beds in current cabins until they upgrade to 2+1 or a permanent solution is found.I'd be interested to hear what you know about the infamous 2+1.........
