that sounds like the thing to do, although ideally I'd like to cycle
This is very do-able. Two of my former colleagues who also live in Chester cycle. Where is the job?BoRED S2upid said:

I think the consensus is that like most towns and Cities you can find nice areas and some complete stholes to live in. A few miles outside of Wrexham towards either Mold or Chester and you can find some really nice places to live and some very nice country pubs with good country roads out of Wrexham to them for a hoon of a Weekend.

some great advice coming through here, appreciate it, certainly a compelling case being made for the surrounding area

Wrexham industrial estate
The back lanes I mention are ideal for getting to the industrial estate. If you head east out of Chester through Huntington then south on the B5130, that's the best route to take. Far less traffic than the A483 and a nicer drive/cycle.
You go through a few villages, Aldford and Farndon are a couple from memory and then turn right when you meet the main A-road. A couple more miles then you're on the industrial estate.
Edit coz I can't speel. And again because I can't use my phone.

As has been said I don't think there is a town/city that doesn't have it's bad bits. To be fair everyone sings Chesters praises but it can be equally as bad as Wrexham and to be fair I've always seen more trouble of a night in Chester than I ever did in Wrexham.
That said, the majority of Wrexham truly is a dump, Acton side being the best bit. If it's just to work there though then maybe it's acceptable - as long as at the end of the day you're getting a good 10 miles away from there!
Some good places all ready mentioned such as Rosset, Ellesmere, outside of Chester (countryside type villages etc) but also consider some villages outside of Mold. My Mrs works in Wrexham and it's about 25min commute from where we are by Cilcain/Pantymwyn which are lovely villages in an area of outstanding beauty. Very close to Loggerheads country park, Moel Fammau and not far from some awesome driving roads!

I moved from Crewe (a dump) to work near Wrexham in 2008. If I thought Crewe was bad, nothing prepares you for Wrexham itself.
And if proof were needed, I rest my case !http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-north-east-wale...

Farndon is a very nice village only about 3 miles at the most from the Industrial estate.
It's good enough for Paul Burrell anyway.
that looks a nice place but the rental prices goes skywards as you cross the border, Mold is about £200 a month cheaper!!!It's good enough for Paul Burrell anyway.
This one is in an ok part - http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/proper...
Then a village 2.5 miles outside Mold - http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/proper...
Then another village 4 miles outside - http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/proper...
Personally I'd be looking at the village ones - unless you need to be able to walk to shops/buses/pubs etc!
I live in Gresford, a village 3 miles from Wrexham.
As has been said on here many times, the town centre and the surrounding estates are a bit of a sh*thole, but no worse than most larger towns in the UK.
There is a large 'Chav / Benefit reliant' population in the town, as well as a lot of Polish/East European migrant workers.
The town does have good range of shops and services.
If you're looking for somewhere to live, my opinon would be to avoid the villages of: New Broughton, Bryteg, Gwersylt, and Llay, and try to stay towards Chester, but If you want cheaper prices try to stay in Wales. (Council Tax cheaper, free perscriptions). If you don't mind a commute then as has been mentioned Mold is a good option, but this is not without its problems (Small town, small town people)
The roads around here can be busy, the main road into the Industrial Estate is a nightmare, although they are improving it and work has just started, I would think a morning commute from Mold to the Industrial Estate would take about 40 mins
All that aside, there are some fantastic roads, great mountain biking at Llandegla, and Snowdonia is 50 mins away. Alternativly you can be on the motorway in 15 mins and into Manchester within and hour.

Appreciate that, I hadn't factored in the traffic re commute from Mold, 40 mins you say? not keen on that.As has been said on here many times, the town centre and the surrounding estates are a bit of a sh*thole, but no worse than most larger towns in the UK.

It's a dilemma whether to look in Chester area or Wales itself (the low costs are tempting). But I guess I'll get a better feel by visiting the places.

Mold is the wrong side of Wrexham for the Industrial estate for example I can cycle to Mold in 40 mins. You have to go through wrexham and out the other side for the Industrial Estate, the new bypass will shave 10 mins off that time when its finished. Gresford, Rossett, Holt, Elsemere are the right side for the Industrial Estate.

Bit late I know.
I'm from Wrexham, have lived in the town and in the villages towards the Shropshire border. Also had many friends from the Chester side and if I was working in Wrexham I would look at either:
Overton, Bangor on Dee, Erbistock, or further out to Ellesmere, Cockshutt and Oswestry.
Avoid St Martins, Ruabon, Chirk.
Or
Rossett, Marford, Gresford, Lavister.
Avoiding Llay, Bradley areas.
